HOT MAMA DRAMA

My dog Spike was up all night. First he wanted to get up on my bed and snuggle. Then he wanted to go outside. Then he just had to visit the garage. Next thing I knew he was back in my room and I had a wet black nose pushing my hand as it hung off the side of the bed. I didn’t know what was going on, and then it hit me.

We had a female curly white Bichon dog living across the street. We call her Hot Mama, and she was in heat.

Spike could smell her and the poor little guy was tempted unforgivingly. When he went out into the garage he could smell her on the garbage cans. He could smell her on the pants I hung by my bed. I’d never seen him so frantic and bothered. What to do?

The answer to this dilemma came quickly. I took the pants out and put them in the washing machine; I took the garbage cans and put them outside. Problem solved and I slept.

This incident reminded me of the battles we all have with temptations. When I meet people who come here to Las Vegas for vacation and they tell me they’re thinking about coming to live here, I often caution them, “If your marriage isn’t totally solid, don’t come here. Every temptation you could ever imagine is available here.”  In diet groups they call certain food temptations “triggers.” They’re usually things like cookies or chips, where you open the bag and can’t stop until you’ve consumed the last crumb.

One of the simplest yet most difficult solutions to getting rid of temptation is just that—getting rid of it. Take the garbage cans out. Don’t bring the cookies in. Avoid venues where your temptations dwell in abundance. We can do this. We have the Lord Jesus Christ to help us get the victory in every situation.

TOO MUCH BAGGAGE

Guess what? We’re not perfect Christians; nobody is. As hard as we may try to be “good,” sometimes we make mistakes. We have to admit that we’ve messed up. We may even have to admit that according to what the Bible says, we’ve sinned. Every Christian still sins and people sin against us. The best we can do is ask the Lord for forgiveness, accept it and move on. The thing is, we CAN change. Now when you fly, you have to pay for extra baggage. It’s the same with our lives—and it costs too much. So let’s see if we can get rid of some of the baggage we’ve been carrying. Let’s lighten up our load. We can’t really move forward if we keep adding to the pile of stuff that we take with us from year to year.

So this is what we can do: First thing is to think about, then write down one temptation that took us away from doing God’s will this past month. Look at that thing and forgive ourselves for doing it.

Jesus is our savior. We mess up; we admit it; He picks us up. He forgives us and we forgive us. Done. But how do we stop from messing up in the same way again?

We need to ask ourselves, “Why did I mess up?” “Why did I allow it?” “What is it in me that may have contributed to bringing this thing to pass?” Once we can see the answer to this “why” question and we have an understanding of it, we can forgive ourselves and get healed.

Any mistakes we make are not in our spirit man—that’s perfect. But mistakes are in our thinking, emotions and decisions—all soul-related.

God said, “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds” (Jer. 30:17). There are no wounds in our spirit, only in our soul. God sent Jesus to earth to show us how to get our souls healed and drop the baggage that is so hard to drag around with us. The older we get the heavier and more cumbersome the bags get.

Paul tells us his deep desire in Philippians 3:10: “That I may know him [Jesus Christ] and the power of his resurrection.” The original Greek word for “power” in this verse is “dunamis.” Dunamis is defined as “miracle-working power, moral power, excellence of soul.”

The resurrection power of Jesus Christ is the miraculous power that refreshes and changes our souls.

It’s in our souls that we err against God, but we’ve been given “dunamis,” which is excellence of soul. We have excellence of soul. Say it, “I have excellence of soul. I have moral power, by the grace of Jesus Christ and the love of God to me.” It’s the same miraculous power that it took to raise Jesus from the bonds of hell, that will miraculously break us free from the bonds of sins and errors in judgement in our soul lives.

The world pushes us to do things that are not good for us. We are taught by the media and by our social, business and political environment, that to succeed we must tell half-truths and lies and it’s okay. We can cheat on some things that don’t seem right to us anyway. We can park in the handicap parking even though we’re perfectly able to walk: little things like that, things that don’t seem to matter much. And yet, they are wrong living. Righteous living just isn’t practical in our world today and less and less people are willing to risk what it takes to do the right thing. But what about God? Do we really think that He doesn’t see or doesn’t care about honesty, morality, integrity? He does. It’s against the flow, but we truly can live a decent, honest life and even prosper doing it. Jesus helps us to do it and one thing at a time, we can be the people who really do have integrity, standards, prudence, sincerity, conscience, justice, kindness, remorse and virtue.

We have that miracle-working power of dunamis in us already. We just have to release it and follow its (His) leading. We can release it by letting the light of dunamis power invade our souls. Like it says many times in the Old Testament, “open the gates.” We say, “I have miracle-working power in me I have excellence of soul and moral power because God gave it to me.” Excellence of soul is to make the right decisions, right choices, the right thoughts according to the spirit of God in Christ in us. It is a choice against the norm. It is a fight for what is right, even if it is a fight against ourselves, against what society dictates. We have the right to win this fight and be free of the bonds of the world around us.

We soak in dunamis like we’d soak a stained piece of clothing. We don’t just dip it in and take it out. It needs to be immersed for a while. We soak our innermost being by meditating on the truth that Jesus Christ wants to heal in our souls. The results are miraculous, not natural, and that’s why we have to keep going to the Lord and soaking in what the Bible says is right thinking. You won’t find right thinking in the ways of the world, only in the ways of Christ, that we find in the writings of those who were inspired by God to write what He wanted said.

Second Timothy 2: 24-26 tells us that when we don’t have excellence of soul in a category of life, we are opposing ourselves and that we are to “awake ourselves out of the snare of the devil.”

As we start to claim our right to exhibit excellence of soul and moral power we will begin to see in our lives where the origins of our errors came from. It takes some reflection.  

Did something make you feel rejected or not good enough as a child? And do those triggers still come up and do you react the same way as you did as a child? Are you still seeking what you lost a long time ago? Do you feel you have to close the door on your real self in order to protect and defend yourself? Did something or someone make you so angry you did and still do things to hurt yourself or others? Did you hide in pain killers or alcohol to protect yourself after a disaster you caused or something else you saw that you don’t ever want to see again? There are so many things in our lives that can keep us doing the wrong things and not stepping out bravely as adults, to do the right thing.

It’s totally understandable, but also totally changeable with Jesus’ help. We may not be able to help someone else with their baggage, but we can understand that they do have baggage just like we do. To change the world, we change ourselves first. We start with our own baggage.

Many of our hurts and errors in judgment started when we were children, or they started at the points of trauma in our lives. Everyone has drama and trauma as a child and as adults. But we have the power to confront the drama and the trauma. God’s Word says we have the miracle dunamis power within us, that as we shine the light on it, we can have our souls changed and healed.

God tells us: “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord” (Jer. 30:17).

Those “wounds” include soul wounds: defeats, blows to our minds and our emotions, causing erroneous defenses, actions that hurt us and others. As we look to God’s Word, that extra baggage that we are still paying for, drops away and we can become the true free people we want to be, an example of integrity and light to those around us.

THE CARPENTER’S HOUSE

I’m recovering from the flu and so at work I’ve been sluggish. But I’m still making an effort to do my very best under the circumstances. Even though I felt like doing less and less, I made myself push through and do a good job anyway. It reminded me of this story about the carpenter:

“An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the home-building business. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work.

He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said, “my gift to you.” The carpenter was shocked.

What a shame. If he had known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then with a shock, we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we’d do it much differently. But we cannot go back.

You are the carpenter. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Your attitude and the choices you make today, build the “house” you live in tomorrow. Build wisely!”

THREE RE-FORMATIONS

The Apostles of the first century church were Jewish. But God had a Reformation in mind. The word “reformation” comes from two words, “re” and “formation.” God said the rules were about to change. The Lord was re-forming the church to expand out freely to the Gentile nations as well. This was a huge change, and met with opposition from those who were used to old ways. God gave this disturbing idea to Peter in a dream. At first Peter argued with God.

In the dream “he saw heaven opened and something coming down that looked like a big sheet being lowered to earth by its four corners. In it were all kinds of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to Peter, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ But Peter said, ‘No, Lord! I have never eaten food that is unholy or unclean.’ But the voice said to him again, ‘God has made these things clean, so don’t call them ‘unholy’!’ This happened three times, and at once the sheet was taken back to heaven” (Acts 10:11-16).

Just as the dream finished, three men came from a Gentile’s house and asked for Peter to come with them to the man’s house. When Peter got there, this Gentile man wanted to hear all about Jesus. The man’s name was Cornelius. He and his entire household got born again and immediately had the proof of it when they all spoke with tongues. Neither Peter nor the men that went with him could deny that the rules had changed. Their idea of the church was re-formed.

“Peter began to speak: ‘I really understand now that to God every person is the same. In every country God accepts anyone who worships him and does what is right. You know the message that God has sent to the people of Israel is the Good News that peace has come through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Lord of all people!’” (Acts 10:34-36).

“The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been given even to the nations [Gentiles]” (v. 45). 

That was a very big deal in the church. It was the very first Reformation.

The second Reformation is the one we all know about with Martin Luther. His re-formation changed the way people of the church related to God. He freed up the Bible for regular people to read, not having to pass through the rules of papal interpretation. The invention of the printing press now made access to the Bible publically available. Every person could read the good news of God and His son Jesus for themselves.

The third Reformation is here in America, just on the cusp of breaking out across the nation. Since 1954 most of the churches of America have signed the papers to be incorporated under 501c3 status. They can get tax exempt status and give members an IRS tax deduction for donating. But by incorporating as a 501c3, a church agrees to stand down to the state. They agree to “act on the behalf of the Government in carrying out governmentally approved policies.”

The IRS Code 501c3 reads: “No part of the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”

One pastor under the 501c3 rule stated: “Take the last presidential election. There were numbers of things that I knew that I was never able to say from the pulpit because if you advance the cause of one candidate or impede the cause of the other you can lose your tax exemption. That would have been disastrous not only for the church, but for our school and our seminary.”

According to the IRS itself, under tax Code 508©(1)(A) the church “is automatically tax-exempt.” Not only that, but according to the IRS Publication 526, a church doesn’t need to become a 501c3 for contributions to be taken as tax deductions.

So why did churches believe they had to become 501c3 incorporated?

1. Ignorance (We didn’t know any better).

2. Bandwagon logic (Everyone else is doing it). And

3. Professional advice (Many attorneys and CPAs recommend it).

When it comes to legal and tax matters, most people just assume that the “licensed professionals” know what they’re talking about. Little do people realize that far too many attorneys never personally study the law for themselves, and are merely parroting what they’ve heard other attorneys say. Once a myth gets started in the legal profession, it tends to spread, particularly when the myth can make a lot of money for the attorneys who take advantage of it.

But God is once again on the Reformation front. He is challenging the stubborn Peter pastors of our day. He is in the process of re-forming the churches of America to set them free of the tyranny of the gag order that now besets so many. Pastors are awakening all over America. The re-formation of American churches is exploding. We will see tremendous results in the months and years to come.

And just like the Reformation in Acts 10 with Peter and the Reformation of the 1500s with Martin Luther, the Word of God will explode and expand throughout the nations of the world and in the lives of each individual who comes into this new liberty in Christ.

TREASURES IN THE HOUSE

Several years ago I listened to a woman on YouTube who was speaking about the second coming of the Jesus Christ. We are told several places in the Bible that no man knows when that day will be. Then other day I listened to a rendition of the great hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” the verse that goes: “When Christ shall come with shout of exclamation, and take us home, what joy shall fill our hearts.” It hit an emotional place in me and I once again realized it is really going to happen! “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:16-17).

The woman’s teaching struck a note with me and I had this thought: If Jesus came tomorrow there would be turmoil and anyone who was not a believer when He came, would still be here. Even some people that we know, could be left behind: neighbors, friends, family members, co-workers, store owners. Most of them would know that we were Christians, so with the chaos, they could end up at our house, looking for some answers, some clues on how to get where we are. Since we don’t take anything with us when Jesus comes for us, all our stuff would still be where we left it.

Would there be blankets? Water? Food? But my big question is: What would people find in my house that would be spiritual food to help them to turn to Jesus and receive everlasting life in heaven?

What’s in your apartment, house, dwelling? If Jesus came tomorrow, would there be a Bible? Some good teaching on your computer? Books that would help people to find the truth about Jesus Christ?

Or would there be lots of extraneous things that wouldn’t really be that helpful to someone who wanted to know Jesus?

Proverbs 15:6 says: “In the house of the righteous is much treasure,” and 1 Corinthians 1:30 says that we are the righteous. So what kinds of things in your house do you and Jesus consider real treasures?

I remember several years back I looked around my house at the pictures I had on my walls. I had Jesus in my heart, but I didn’t have much on my walls that indicated my love for Him. So I changed that and I continue to make changes to my physical environment to reinforce my spiritual temperament.

Just this week, I was home with the flu, and today I finally had enough energy to move around and do some things. I took a critical look at my two bookshelves of Christian books and I started pulling out the books I knew I’d never read—they weren’t treasures to me. I pulled out books authored by pastors I no longer trust, unless I felt the information was more valid than the personality or the downward path the pastor may have taken since the book was written. It was a great purging—making room for new books, new treasures that both the Lord and I would be proud of; and fresh Biblical teachings to compliment the old ones.

It was also good to see the old books, ancient Biblical treasures, even from grammar school and high school—like old friends who’ve passed the test of time all these years. As they’ve watched me grow, they are still a wonderful part of my present self.

I look forward to seeing my environment change from glory to glory as I’m open and willing to include more Godly treasures into my home. I hope you will take the time, as well, to do some inventory checks in your own home. Let’s get some things up around us that bless and inspire us in the ways of our Lord.

TEN VIRGINS AND THE OIL

It was about 9p.m. and I was watching TV when all the lights went out. No electricity in the whole neighborhood. Thoughts were flying through my mind in rapid succession like bullets from an automatic rifle: “I have to get my flashlight. It’s dark. I won’t be able to see out there. Sh..t, I should have recharged the batteries the last time. Do I have any other flashlights? Yes, In my car. Phew!” I was just about to get up out of my chair and all the lights and sounds come charging back to life.

A couple days later I thought about not having the batteries ready for my flashlight. It reminded me of the Bible story about the ten virgins with the oil lamps. They took their lamps to meet the bridegroom and go to the wedding. But only five took extra oil for their lamps so they’d be prepared. The bridegroom was late so the five without extra oil were running out of light. They thought they could borrow some from the others but that wasn’t going to happen.

“Five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

“And at midnight there was a cry made: ‘Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.

“And the foolish said unto the wise, ‘Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Not so, lest there be not enough for us and you; but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.’

“And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut” (Matt. 25:1-10).

We learn from this passage that each of us is responsible to get his or her own oil. No one else is responsible to read the Bible for us and no one else can do our believing for us. An interesting point here is that the wise women didn’t give the foolish ones any of their extra oil. Wow, that’s seems pretty harsh, right? But the truth is that there comes a point when sharing what we have and giving to others comes to a God-ordained halt, and going any further is futility and sin.

It’s hard sometimes to know when to stop with a person, but if we stay too long (longer than the Lord wants), we’re not really helping them and we’re not helping ourselves either. Matthew 22:39 tells us: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” We love ourselves by doing what the Lord wants, not what people want, and not necessarily what we want either. But God is in charge of the outcome and He knows the best route to get there.

If a relationship is going nowhere, it’s probably time to enlist the help of another laborer! “Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest” (Matt. 9:37-38).

The women who were prepared, went on to the party and the others missed out. The parable about the ten virgins is about being ready when Jesus comes back. Nobody knows when that will be, but there will be a day when Jesus returns and everything changes.

“The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” (2 Pet. 3:10).

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God” (1 Thess. 4: 16).

Jesus said that when the judgment day comes, every man will have to account for every idle word he speaks: “But I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment” (Matt. 12:36).

“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 1:7).

Our works are to be built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. “If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss” (1 Cor. 3:13-15).

“Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be?” (2 Pet. 3:11).

People want to feel that their lives are meaningful and that they are contributing good things into this world. Once Jesus comes back, we don’t get the chance to do it over again. So let’s let’s unload the burdens the Lord says “leave and let go.”

We only have one life to live here on earth right now, no reincarnation. We need to make every day count to the best of our ability.

We don’t want to miss a chance to say something kind, do something significant for someone else, give a smile, help someone, minister healing, cast out a devil spirit, etc. “We are all the children of light” (1 Thess. 5:5) and we can “walk as children of light” (Eph. 5:8).

“Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel” (Matt. 5:15). Let your unique, God-inspired light shine.

The end of our world is imminent and according to the Bible, it could be any day. Let’s make a difference here while we can. If we think more often about Jesus’ return, we will live our lives more like the women who carried extra oil, rather than the ones whose light ran out.

Like it says in Romans 13:12: “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.”

If we live like today could be our last, it just could be our best.

After the lights came back on that night, I recharged the batteries for my flashlight. Today I’m recharging my heart for the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE PRAYING MANTIS AND THE ANGEL

I looked out onto the patio and saw something strange going on. My cat, Snowy, was slowly backing up, ears flattened against his head and shackles up. His teeth were snarling and he was hissing. Something was scaring him and making him back off.

I opened the sliding glass door and went out slowly, expecting to see some big stray cat or dog ready to attack. What I saw was something quite different.

It was only a 2 inch praying mantis with its colorful, frightfully angular wings spread out wide like a mantle over her. She looked ferocious and she was running full speed toward Snowy! They don’t often show their wings. It’s like their secret weapon and apparently it works well. Snowy turned tail and scurried into the house through the opened patio door!

Sometimes the angels act in a similar way, to be our secret weapons. A few years back, I was having a particularly hard time at work and I felt weakened. I looked up the scripture in Psalm 103:20 “Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.” I prayed they would go to my work ahead of me and help me there.

When I got to work, I went upstairs to the open loft where we did our painting. Around the edge was a three-foot wooden railing. I could see in the spirit a very large angel sitting comfortably on the corner. His wings spread out to each side along the edge of my work space. I felt protected and strong. This went on every day for several months until I moved to a new work location, where it seemed I didn’t need the added protection any more.

Every year my garden is visited by praying mantis so I’ve had plenty of opportunities to observe them, but only once did I see one spread its wings out like when it chased my cat across the patio.  

Like the mantis, we don’t always go around showing off our stuff, but when it becomes necessary, we certainly have our secret weapons. One of them is the privilege to pray for the Lord to send angels. They are loosed in heaven and according to Hebrews 1:14 and Matthew 4:11 they minister to us and for us. Most of the time we don’t even know they’re there but they are strong to protect us and can back off danger.

My backyard was fresh from the watering I just gave it; the sun had set and it was that wonderful time of the evening, just before it gets too dark. I looked up, and even in the city lights of a Las Vegas sky, I was able to pick out some of the constellations and stars. I found the North Star, at the tip of the Little Dipper. The Little Dipper, Biblically, represents God’s sheepfold. The North Star at the tip of the Little Dipper’s handle is the most important star of the sky. It is now the Polar star, meaning it is at the center; it’s position is fixed and all other stars revolve around it. But that was not always the case.

Over 4000 years ago, the star called Thuban, in the constellation Draco (the dragon), was the Polar Star. Draco represents Satan. His constellation is a large twisting constellation that circles overhead around the sheepfold in the northern sky. The Bible tells us Lucifer, the devil, wanted to be like God. He wanted to be the ultimate Polar star, the center around which everything and everyone, orbited.

Isaiah 14 tells us the story in written form, of what God created for mankind in the story of the stars above us:

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, who didst weaken the nations!

“For thou hast said in thine heart, ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. [note: Draco sits in the sides of the most northern sky].

“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High’” (Is. 14:12-14).

But Satan did not get his way.

“There was war in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not.

“And the great dragon was cast out — that serpent of old called the Devil and Satan, who deceiveth the whole world” (Rev. 12:7-9).

I don’t really know if the moving of the Polar star happened when Lucifer was cast out of heaven, but it’s an interesting thought. But isn’t it so great that the star in Draco is NOT the center of the sky any more, but rather the star in the sheepfold is the center?! Jesus will forever be the center of everything.

I just love how God has put His truth in everything He created.

Psalm 19:1 says: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handiwork.”
