THE MOST LIBERATING END OF THE YEAR EXERCISE EVER

Want to start 2015 free and clear of emotional, mental, and perhaps even spiritual baggage? Then do this exercise. It will surprise you in several ways and will set you on a clean and happy path for the upcoming year.
Thanks Margo for sharing this with me so many years ago!

STEP 1: Make a list of every grief, major or minor, that others caused you this past year. List names and incidents. The more details, the more free you’ll get.

STEP 2: Add to the list any past hurts people have caused you that are still bugging you.

STEP 3: Go through the list and categorize the grievances. I’ve listed some of the categories I’ve addressed over the years, as examples to get you started:
-people not caring about other people’s feelings
-good people letting evil people rule over them
-people getting angry when confronted with the truth and trying to hide from it or ignore it
-people who use their power or position to manipulate others
-promises made that were broken
-not asking for help or even recognizing when it comes
-pushy people

STEP 4: For each of the categories ask yourself, “Have I ever acted this way toward God?”

When I did this exercise for the first time, this fourth step was a great awakening. And every year since has been a huge refreshing. I realize I am just as much of a sinner as anyone who has offended me. I acknowledge what God has forgiven me for and then I know I have no right to withhold forgiveness from anyone else. So I let them go and I forgive.

If I feel any lingering hurt or anger, I just have to give it to God. I remind Him I need some help, “God, I’m not doing so well with this, so You’re going to have to do something from there.” And of course He does.

The servant in Matthew 18:21-35 had been forgiven but then he turned around and wouldn’t forgive. The Bible tells us this unforgiveness tormented him and that’s how it is with us. As long as we don’t forgive, the disturbing thoughts are going to still be attached to us and be like arthritis or cancer, that just wants to grow, spread and take over. Doing this one small exercise is the floodgate to awesome freedom as we begin 2015.

Charge ahead! Like the Bible says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil 4:13).

Love, Carolyn

WHEN SOMEONE DOESN'T WANT YOUR HELP, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?

During the holidays we see family members and friends who are hurting. We try to help the best we can but sometimes it seems they just can’t receive it from us. Maybe they “know” the old us too well and it’s like Jesus when he went to Nazareth where he grew up: “He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (Matt 13:58). They only knew him as the carpenter’s son, as a regular guy, not the spiritually tapped-in empowered guy he was now! God in His foreknowledge already anticipated this scenario and provided a solution. There is always something we can do.

Jesus explains it in Matthew 9:33-10:1. In verse 33 we see Jesus casting out a demon. In verse 35 we’re told he was “healing every sickness and every disease among the people.” Verse 36 tells us when he saw the multitudes, his heart went out to them. We all have these feelings of compassion and love toward friends and relatives, especially during the holidays. But we can’t help them all. Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few” (v.37).

He told the people to pray that God would send other laborers into His harvest (v.38).

Then Jesus showed them how it would be done in the very next verse: He sent out other laborers besides himself (chpt.10, verse 1). He didn’t say “Schedule more meetings for me.” He didn’t say, “I have to do it all myself.” The Savior of the world, when he was here in the flesh, didn’t rely on himself to deliver and heal everyone. What an amazing concept and a really important one for us to understand.

As wonderful and powerful as Jesus was, when he was looking with love and compassion on the hurting people right there in front of him, he couldn’t help them all. When we see the people we love, and they are hurting, our hearts go out to them too. But we can’t help everyone and there’s no need to feel bad about not being able to help someone close to us. Sometimes I just have to tell myself, “I’m not their savior.”  If Jesus couldn’t heal everyone close to him, why do we think we can?

But Jesus showed us a way to help them anyway.

He showed us we are to pray for another Christ-inspired person to step in. What a wonderful and powerful thing to know and what a comfort and assurance. There’s never any guilt when it comes to love. We can always help in some way.

People respond favorably to different people. You don’t respond to everyone in the same way and neither do your loved ones. They’ll connect to someone who says the same thing you say, but when it comes from someone else it sounds so much better. That’s just the way life is; we’re all that way.

We can offer help but if it’s not taken, we can still be very effective by praying for someone else to help them.

And what will that other laborer do? Much! They will have “power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease” (Matt 10:1). That’s spectacular!

So don’t be discouraged this holiday season if you feel snubbed or somewhat helpless. Be encouraged; there’s power in prayer for another laborer to come in to help, when you can’t. And if you’re not being anxious about someone you care about, then you free yourself up for God to bless you even more. And God ALWAYS answers this prayer.

STOP THE BLEEDING

During the holidays when we see relatives and we’re around new people, we’re often met with stories of circumstances that are so complicated and awful that even the heartiest of believers among us could be tempted to think there’s no solution. I’ve seen the devil pull this scenario again and again. The idea of no solution and no answer is definitely the message Satan wants to propound at a time when we’re celebrating the birth of Christ. Jesus Christ who is the answer to every problem and has the solution to every trouble, no matter how complex or seemingly incurable.

We have the Lord Jesus Christ; we have the Bible; we have angels; but sometimes we forget that we also have each other. And it’s not a sin to ask for help. In fact the Lord tells us we are to confess our faults one to another, so we can get help (James 5:16). It doesn’t do us any good to keep things bottled up inside.

If you were physically bleeding from a stab in the back, and you couldn’t stop it, you’d get yourself to the hospital and find help. It’s the same with us mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We have been given other people in the body of Christ to help stop the bleeding.

One of the biggest errors I see in the body of Christ is the hesitation to ask for help. I’m definitely guilty of that myself. Pride gets in the way and even figuring out exactly what to ask or who to ask becomes a challenge.

It can seem hard, but we need to remember that asking someone to pray for us or give Godly counsel benefits both parties. The person asking for help gets needed assistance and the person being asked gets a chance to stretch out his or her believing to manifest God’s love, maybe even in a different way than before. It’s a healing and wholesome exchange.

I believe that honesty in the body of Christ and asking for help when we need it, will bring us closer as a family. With all the challenges we face in the world today, we need the expertise of others to help us face and overcome new adversities that confront us.

REBELLIOUS CAROLYN GETS A NEW NATURE IN CHRIST

My boss wanted me to paint on the sculpture’s hand but I wanted to finish what I was painting on the leg. My rebellious nature wanted me to argue and give the reason why my idea was better. But I didn’t say anything because something has changed.

That rebellious nature I’ve exhibited since a child has dissipated and I’ve watched myself take on a much more humble and yielding attitude. It’s like being outside myself looking at a totally different person. It has to be Jesus’ new nature in me because it’s certainly not the old Carolyn. I hardly recognized my new self.

On my last several jobs I found it easy to yield to my bosses and fellow workers. I’m more sensitive to their wishes. If they asked for a suggestion, I gave it, but I didn’t butt in with what I thought. And the thing is, I’m loving it. It’s fun and peaceful and rewarding and most of all, it’s not fake!

Only Jesus Christ could make that change in me so remarkable and permanent. And why it happened now instead of years ago, I can’t tell you. I’m just so pleased to see it.

I was a rebellious child, an even more rebellious teenager and it continued in my personality over the years. I think most people have issues with rebellion of one sort or another. It’s because rebellion was inherited from the first man, Adam, and it was passed down through generations in the blood.

But the birth of the second Adam, Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:45), changed the nature of human blood for those who receive him.  Once Jesus was born, there was one man with uncontaminated, non-rebellious blood. That is a really big deal; no wonder a multitude of angels showed up and were rejoicing at His birth!

New blood and consequently a new nature was introduced on earth. Jesus didn’t get his blood from his mother, Mary, but from God. Jesus’ blood was not prone to disobedience, rebellion, pride, or other human failings.

When a person gets born again, they receive that new blood of Jesus. There are at least 19 million cells in one square inch of skin and each one is affected by blood. The pure life blood of Jesus effects every cell in us.

The old nature dies and Jesus’ nature takes over. Some things may change immediately, but others take time, but they will happen. Jesus’ meek nature was working in my blood for years until it just suddenly popped out as the new true me and I’m so much happier now. God says stay faithful. He knows that if we will continue to love Him, the gift of His son Jesus Christ will continue to bless us and change our very natures to be more like Him.

WHEN WE PRAY

One of the preemie twins (weighing in at just a little over 4 lbs) was having open heart surgery. I texted back that I’d pray. Then I went on to check my other texts, posts and e-mails. A few minutes went by and I caught myself, “Carolyn, you need to pray NOW!” It’s way too easy these days to go through e-mails, social network posts, texts, etc. and take the messages in as mental information without really engaging and DOING something about them. When it comes to prayer we need to change this bad habit.

Prayer is a very powerful force that gets things done and it needs to be taken seriously. Mark 11:24 says that when we pray we are to believe – right then, not later, not pray and hope there will be an answer, not pray and wish, but focus enough when we pray – focus on the answer we want – the end result. When we pray, believe. We need to stay in pray until we are convinced, persuaded, and sure that God has heard and is answering.

Too much praying has been, “If it be your will.” If we spend time in the Bible, then we won’t have to say “if” all the time, because we will know what God’s will is.

When we pray for someone it’s a serious matter. It means something. It is not casual or frivolous. According to God’s written word, prayer can heal, get people delivered from devil spirits, alter weather conditions and many more things. It’s powerful and effective.

Jane and I prayed about the baby’s heart surgery. We already knew and believed what the Bible says about children being a blessing (Ps 127:3-5). We also believed in God’s ability to work through the surgeon’s hands. We knew that the parents were standing in faith for the little girl to live and grow strong. We knew that the Bible says if two agree in prayer, God will do it (Matt 18:19). So when we prayed together we were totally persuaded God would answer – and He did. She went through the surgery with flying colors, had a speedy recovery and all the tubes were taken out in only a few days.

Prayer works. The Lord willingly and lovingly answers our prayers. So the next time someone asks for prayer on something let’s pay attention, stop a few minutes and take the time to pray. And if we ask people to pray for us, we should expect to get results too.

OUR YOUTH IS RENEWED LIKE THE EAGLE'S

Today I turned 65. I’ve been blessed with great health. Partly it’s genetic, but a lot of my strength and youthfulness I attribute to quoting Psalm 103:5 every morning as I’m driving to work. It says, “He satisfies my mouth with good things so that my youth is renewed like the eagles.”

As the eagle goes through the different stages of its life, molting takes place and the new feathers are graciously provided. God created a way for this majestic bird to grow the necessary new beautiful feathers as it matures. We need the same thing, brand new feathers to keep us youthful and strong as we also mature.

In my opinion, this scripture is not only talking about God providing good physical food we can eat that can renew our youthfulness, but even more important is the bread of life God’s given us to eat—His living word. As we take the truths of the Bible into us and as we speak them out of our mouth, we get new insight, answers that weren’t there before, fresh understanding and youthful excitement.

I believe that taking delight in God’s Word, both the written word and the awesomeness of the Lord’s presence in our everyday lives keeps us strong and our youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

STARTS OFF DIFFICULT, ENDS UP GREAT

I knew it was going to be rough from the minute I got in my car to go to work. The sky was overcast – Las Vegas doesn’t like bad weather. I walked into the paint shop and was pierced with the kind of cold that goes right through you.

My task for the day was to come up with the colors and a technique for making a piece of Masonite look like beautiful mahogany. I was having trouble with the basecoat—too dull and not enough red in it. I worked at it and adjusted my color again and again. I had to match the live sample as closely as possible and it just wasn’t coming together.

I’d recently purchased new shoes and I was on a cement floor for 7 ½ hours. My legs hurt, my back hurt and I was worn out. Even the Motrin wasn’t working.

My attitude was as desperate and frayed as the nerves in my back.  My mind was spiraling, but I knew if I could make it through the day I’d be okay.

At the end of my work day I was mentally exhausted but I knew I wanted to go out to the local coffee shop and get some writing done. It would be too dangerous to sit down in my easy chair at home, so I quickly made myself a sandwich and scarfed it down. I kicked off my new work shoes, changed into comfortable clothes and took off for the coffee shop with my Bible and my notebook.

My favorite table in the back was open so I sat down. But before I started my writing, I got my Bible opened to read some scripture, desperately needing some refreshing after a tough day. I turned to Psalm 107:20, “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

I read further. I could relate to verse 26. It described how I started my day:  “They go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.  They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble.”

The next part of the scripture didn’t happen until over 8 hours later. “And he bringeth them out of their distresses.  He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven” (vss. 28-30).

I was finally happily embracing the warmth of the low lighting in the coffee shop, drinking a cup of freshly brewed coffee and enjoying the peace of mind after a very stressful eight hours of difficulty.

We all have days like that, but I’m so glad the Lord gets us through them. With the holidays on us, there’s plenty of situations to get stressed about, so my suggestion is that at the end of every day we take a few minutes to pray or read a scripture or two. It will really help.

UNDER HIS WING

Sometimes I just want to breathe a sigh of relief and be comforted. And that’s when I like to picture myself snuggled under God’s wing.

Psalm 91:4 says, “He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust.” I love to revel in that image. It brings peace to my mind and heart.

David said, “How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wing” (Ps 36:7). Almighty God is willing to put His powerful and protective wings over us because He loves us so much.

In another Psalm David prayed, “Hide me under the shadow of thy wings” (Ps 17:8). Under God’s wing nothing can hurt or harm us.

Ruth was a Moabite. When she lost her husband, her mother-in-law told her she should go back to her people. But Ruth wanted to stay and take care of her widowed mother-in-law. She decided, “Thy people shall be my people and thy God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Boaz saw Ruth’s meekness and said, “The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust” (Ruth 2:12). I imagine Ruth was in some ways very alone in this new place and with new people, so it must have been a wonderful feeling that she could rely on and really feel comfort from God.

So if you’re like me or Ruth and sometimes feel like you need a break or some extra comfort, or you feel like David and just need to hide, you can picture yourself cozy under the wing of God.

THE DEVIL WILL NEVER CLICK THE "LIKE" BUTTON

I went into the Starbucks and sat down to read the Bible and write. I looked up and this creepy guy was staring at me from outside. I tried to ignore him, but every time I looked up, there he was with big googly eyes looking right at me! Yuk. I couldn’t concentrate on what I was doing so I moved out of his line of vision. But then he came inside and sat right in the big easy chair that focused right on me! I couldn’t get a thing done and wasn’t smart enough to just turn my back on him or get out of there. I lost that battle.

The next several times when I went to study and write, similar things happened with different people at different locations. I got wise to what the devil was doing. He always goes too far and I catch him and nail him. The devil is never on our side! And to those of you who are Facebook users, the devil never clicks the “like” button for you. We are in a constant war with him.

In the end we win, but in each battle we need God’s wisdom of what to do. A person in the military or any competitive sport knows that battles get fought and won by different strategies. Winners are people who can hold out mentally. Often, as in tennis, the competitors’ skills are equal, but the ultimate winner is the one who endures mentally.

Our strategy is the wisdom of God. So the next time you get attacked, don’t let it go on for too long like I did, but go to God right away and find out His strategy for the battle. “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Rom 8:37).

GOD INTERVENED TO BRING AMERICA'S FIRST THANKSGIVING

Within the first year, half of the 102 Pilgrims who landed in America, died. Of the 50 who remained only 6 or 7 were strong enough to care for the others.

William Bradford was their leader. He survived the first devastating winter of 1620 and went on to serve as governor of Plymouth for 33 years. From his book, Of Plymouth Plantation, comes this amazing story of how God intervened for the Pilgrims’ survival in this new land:

“About ye 16. Of March a certaine Indian came bouldly amongst them, and spoke to them in broken English, which they could well understand, but marveled at it… He tould them also of another Indian whos name was Squanto, a native of this place, who had been in England & could speake better English then him selfe.

“Afterwards they (as many as were able) began to plant ther corne, in which servise Squanto stood them in great stead, showing them both ye maner how to set it, and after how to dress & tend it. Also he tould them excepte they got fish & set with it (in these old grounds) it would come to nothing, and he showed them yt in ye midle of Aprill they should have store enough come up ye brooke, by which they begane to build, and taught them how to take it, and wher to get other provisions necessary for them; all which they found true by trial & experience… And thus they found ye Lord to be with them in all their ways, and to blesse their outgoings & incomings, for which let his holy name have ye praise for ever, to all posteritie.”

Bradford added, “Squanto… was a special instrument sent of God for their good beyond their expectation.”

How God worked in Squanto’s life is really amazing. In 1605, a member of the Native American Patuxet tribe, Squanto was captured by an English explorer and taken to England where he learned to speak English. In 1614 Captain John Smith brought him back to America but he was captured again and taken to Spain to be sold as a slave.  Local Catholic friars rescued him and introduced him to Christianity.

He went back to England and got on a ship to his native America. But when he got home, he found that all of his tribe had been killed by a plague. The sudden death of the whole tribe scared the neighboring tribes and so they never went onto the property, making it available for the Pilgrims. Also because of the odd circumstances of the tribe’s annihilation, the other tribes didn’t attack the Pilgrims and Squanto facilitated a peace treaty that lasted over 50 years.

With Squanto’s help, the Pilgrims’ second winter was much better. To celebrate, Governor Bradford appointed a day of Thanksgiving and invited Squanto’s newly adopted tribe to come and give thanks to God with them. The chief and 90 of his men came and feasted. They ate deer, turkey, fish, lobster, eels, vegetables, corn bread, berries, pies and popcorn that the Native Americans showed the Pilgrims how to make.  They competed in games of wrestling, shooting and running. The chief had such a good time he and his men stayed and celebrated for three days.

This was the first official American Thanksgiving.

If you’d like to read more about this time in America I recommend America’s Providential History by Mark Beliles and Stephen McDowell and William Bradford: Plymouth’s Faithful Pilgrim by Gary Schmidt.

THANKSGIVING RELATIONSHIPS

If you were to go to the car dealership today and buy a new Mercedes, its value would begin to depreciate the minute you drive it off the lot. When we are not making a conscious effort to say “Thank you” to the other person in a relationship, with God or with people, the same thing happens—their value begins to depreciate in our minds.

How much better would we feel if people thanked us more often? Think about it. It means they first of all had to take notice of you. Saying “thank you” means a decision, effort and positive action is made in your direction. Showing a little appreciation seems like a very small thing but actually it’s pretty great. It’s like a baby compliment for something you said or did or are. And who doesn’t need a few more kudos and compliments now and then?

Being thankful shows APPRECIATION. If we aren’t thankful, DEPRECIATION sets in. Francine can show appreciation for her husband, but if she doesn’t, his value can start to depreciate in her eyes and pretty soon she’s asking for a divorce. At this point Gerard, her husband, has little to no hope for recovery. Fortunately situations like this can often be prevented by the consistent application of two simple words in the relationship, “Thank you.”

Relationships appreciate or depreciate in proportion to thanksgiving.

When someone shows us how much they appreciate us, we’re willing to do more. God’s relationship with us is also better when we tell Him thank you. Awesome benefits come with expressing appreciation and thanksgiving.

By truly thanking the Lord from our hearts, He becomes bigger in our minds. We become more aware of the miracles, the mercy, the healing and the deliverance He brings into our everyday lives. David says, “I will magnify him with thanksgiving” (Ps 69:30). We know we can’t really make God any bigger than He already is, but we certainly can make Him bigger in our own thinking and believing. We make the Lord’s presence larger in our lives by saying thank you and showing appreciation.

Daniel thanked God when it was against the law. “He kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God” (Dan 6:10). And if you remember, Daniel was miraculously saved from the lion’s den. Praying and thanking God three times a day magnified God in Daniel’s heart and his life. It brought the magnificence of God to the forefront of Daniel’s thinking.

I believe that if we follow Daniel’s example of thanking God, we will more often be seeing the magnificence of God come to the forefront of our minds. Daniel saw and believed in the Almighty God who could bring to pass miracles. God did an amazing miracle for Daniel in rescuing him from the hungry man-eating lions.

The Apostle Paul also made a practice of thanking God. He was in a ship in the middle of a hurricane and though the storm pummeled the ship and everyone thought they would die, Paul boldly told them they would not die. “He gave thanks to God in the presence of them all” (Acts 27:35). They crashed onto an island but all 276 lives were saved.

Let’s not let our relationship with God or people depreciate. Let’s say thank you and show heartfelt appreciation often. We’ll see God bigger, our relationships with people will be richer and our personal lives will be more blessed because of it.

"LET HIM LABOR TO HAVE TO GIVE"

My best friend Jane and I went to visit Pauline, who we hadn’t seen in years. She had come on hard times but I didn’t know just how bad things were until she answered this question: “What are your boys getting for Christmas this year?”

Her head hung down and she answered, “I don’t have any money so I have to wrap some of their old toys so they have something to open.” It broke my heart. She showed us the two toys she planned to wrap, a deflated football and a broken truck.

Jane and I each had $50 extra we could spend so we asked Pauline what the boys would like. Off we went to the store. We stretched that $100 as far as we could and bought every fun thing we could think of including the new football and shiny red truck they told their mom they really wanted. We also bought two of the biggest Christmas stockings we could find and filled them with candy and small things for each of them. Everything went under the Christmas tree.

On Christmas morning when they opened up those presents, the look of delight on their faces totally outweighed the effort and money we spent. I’ll never forget that Christmas.

The Las Vegas casinos give away prizes all year long and Jane collects them for the end of the year. She made up a game to play on Christmas Eve with my family and we give away the prizes, but this year we were inspired to do something different.

Starbucks was collecting gifts for the kids at the local Rescue Mission, so we pulled down the boxes from the attic and opened them up. We found all kinds of cute kids’ stuff. Then we decided to take it a step further and were excited to find warm blankets, some winter gloves, jewelry, jackets, long-sleeved shirts and all kinds of things. The more we found to give, the happier and more excited we got.  When we went on-line to see what they needed, we found that they wanted Bibles. That really made my day. I happen to have a small collection and several for children and teens. You know, that really touched my heart.

Ephesians 4:28 says, “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”

It’s my opinion that in the past several years there’s been way too much emphasis put on giving to get. But here in Ephesians it’s just the opposite, we get to give!

“Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).
The Greek word for blessed in this verse means “happier.” I got to experience the true delight of giving and you can too. Think about it.

SOMETIMES WE DOUBT BUT GOD STILL HEARS AND ANSWERS

I was sitting in my living room early in the morning and I heard flapping in my chimney. I knew a bird was caught and I prayed it would somehow get out. When I was praying I listened as the Holy Spirit told me to put some bread in the fireplace so the bird would come down and be free.

My actions showed that I was in doubt because I went off to work, automatically leaving the door open so Snowy our cat could get into the living room. When I got home, sure enough God had answered my prayer and the pigeon was sitting on the mantel. It was bedraggled and shivering as Snowy prowled around below it. I picked Snowy up and put him in the bedroom. Then I gently clutched the frightened bird and took him outside where he flew away to freedom.

The next day I was at a garage sale and found a plaque of the same type of bird God saved for me. I hung it up on my bedroom wall to remind me that God always answers my prayers.

There’s a story in Acts 12 similar to mine, where people were praying but still doubting at the same time. Their actions showed they didn’t expect God to really answer their prayers. This is the story:

Peter got thrown into prison and Christians gathered at Mary’s house to pray. The Bible doesn’t tell us what they were praying about but we can pretty much assume they were praying for Peter’s release. God answered their prayer miraculously by sending an angel to lead him out.

Peter showed up at Mary’s house where they were praying and Rhoda answered the door. She saw him and was so excited she ran in to tell the others and forgot to let Peter in. She told them Peter was there in the flesh but they said she was crazy and decided it must be an angel. They believed in angels, but they failed to really believe God was answering their prayer for Peter to get out of prison.

Peter kept pounding on the door and finally they came to the door. They were astonished and must have all been talking at once because Peter had to quiet them down to tell the story of his escape (Acts 12:1-17).

Even though I prayed, I didn’t really believe God would save the pigeon and these people didn’t really believe God would save Peter. My experience with the pigeon was a turning point for me. It showed me that God ALWAYS answers my prayers. He doesn’t always do it in the manner I expect or even in the time frame I would like, but He does always answer.

We can trust that He will do it every time. Jesus always tells the truth: “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24). Notice He said “when” you pray. So at the very time of praying we need to tell ourselves that we believe God’s going to answer.

OUR DAILY BREAD

A couple weeks ago my friend Stephen was telling me that in spite of his wife’s wry looks, he always prayed over his food. “I’ve been behind the scenes in a restaurant and I know what can happen.” I had just been back-of-house in one of the hotels that very week and also saw some not so great things happening with the food, so I knew what he was talking about.

After Stephen told me his story, I thought, “I need to get back in the habit of asking God to bless my food.” I remember as a child sitting around the dinner table with my family and we said a blessing over the food before we ate, but sadly I’ve gotten out of practice except for the formal prayer at holiday dinners.

I’m pretty sure some of the intestinal issues we deal with these days could be avoided if we will remember to pray before we eat.

I hadn’t put my new plan into action yet and this week I had two separate incidents of bad food. One was my fault because I forgot to put my salad dressing back in the refrigerator after work and I used it the next day—stomach cramps, yuk. The other was with some milk I put in my coffee in the morning. The milk was beginning to sour even though the date said it was okay. I didn’t realize it until my roommate told me later. Fortunately I was fine, but I bet if I had prayed first, the Lord would have warned me.

First Thessalonians 5:18 says that in everything we are to give thanks. Jesus was our great example: “And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would” (John 6:11).

After mulling it over for a few days, this is the prayer I came up with: “God I thank you for this food that it will nourish my body. And thank you for protecting me from any unknown evil that might be in it.” I felt I needed to add the last sentence in light of all the additives, genetically engineered foods and unclean food handling habits these days.

In Bible times they ate pretty purely; maybe some goat’s milk gone bad, but they didn’t have to deal with all the stuff we deal with today. Even if we do our best to eat organically and avoid genetically engineered food, there are still so many hidden factors.

Like with any new or rejuvenated habit, it takes time for it to become second nature. Today I was about 50% better than yesterday. (I only remembered to pray once I’d already started my lunch.) But tomorrow I expect to do better and the next day even better.

Thanks Stephen for inspiring me not only to be thankful, but ultimately healthier too, both of which are God’s will for our lives.

Love, Carolyn

GOD'S TRUTH ABOUT OUR LIFE EXPECTANCY

Jane was in surgery and was starting to come out of the anesthesia when she hit a distinct point of decision. She saw the male nurse walk across the room calling her name. At that moment Jane knew that she had the choice to wake up or just let go. She determined, “I’m not done yet. God has more for me to do.” And she made herself wake up.

In Psalm 91:16 God promises us a long satisfying life: “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

People believe that 70 or 80 years is considered a good life expectancy. Church people go along with this and base their belief on Psalm 90:10 which says, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten [70]; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years [80], yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” But this Psalm was written by Moses and it was to the Israelites who disobeyed God in the wilderness; so their lives were cut short.

People took what was written to others and wrongly applied it to themselves. This error has been propounded for thousands of years and has biased nearly all cultures. Even science has been influenced by that lie. But the truth is tucked away in plain sight.

God says mankind’s lifespan “shall be an hundred and twenty years” (Gen 6:3). Who knew? The lady in France who smoked and lived to be 107? The former American slave who lived to preach in Africa at age 103? But because people have mistakenly believed to only live 70 to 80 years, we’ve missed out on so much wisdom and great insight that is unique to ages beyond 80. Instead of seeking the wisdom that comes with age, we look for things to go wrong.

I’m not blaming anyone in particular for perpetuating error, just saying that as hard as it is to fight thousands of years of wrong thinking, we need to reverse our thinking and take hold of the truth.

God wants us to be satisfied with a long healthy life.  We don’t have to give up at 70 or 80 if we’re not quite full yet. According to Genesis 6:3 we can certainly live longer, until we’re totally satisfied. The goal of a good life is to be satisfied and see God’s wholeness. Whether at 50 or 120, we want to be able to say, like the Apostle Paul, “For I am now ready, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim 4:7).
When Jane was on that recovery table, she was not ready to go. She decided 62 years were not enough.
While we’re here, let’s do our best to do all we’ve been called to do; receive and give and experience all the salvation (wholeness) God shows us.

WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT POLITICAL OFFICES

Yesterday in Nevada we voted for several different offices. They included a representative for the US Congress in Washington D.C., the State Governor, State Treasurer, Sheriff and 30 different judges. These people make decisions every day that affect us and most of us aren’t even aware of what they’re doing, that is, until it becomes personal.

I will probably never be in the presence of any of the 30 judges I voted for, but if I am, or if any of my friends or family had to go before one of these judges, I would want them to be ethical, compassionate and fair, wouldn’t you? Of course you would. And what about the top sheriff? And the guy who decides what our money is going to be used for? These are important decisions and if you’re like me, you probably don’t really know much about these people, what they really think, how they act at home, how they treat their kids, etc.

For some elections I tried to find out as much as I could about the people I voted for. But in some cases I really didn’t find out very much. And honestly I’m not going to take the time during the year to keep up with how 30 different judges are acting. If you are anything like me, you’ll want to know what we can do to get the best people in office.

Yes, researching the people is important and since they make decisions that affect us, we should try to do as much as we can to find out about these people. But equally important is what the Bible says to do.

Paul tells Timothy, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.” Then he goes on to include political figures: “For kings, and for all that are in authority.” Then he gives us the reason: “That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour” (2 Tim 2:1-3).

God’s not just talking about praying, “God bless the politicians. Amen.” We need to think a little deeper concerning what to pray about. We can pray that God influence them to make right decisions even if not popular; that they have good people around them to help them; that they receive insight and wisdom from Godly sources; that they stay meek to learn; that they’re inspired to think more about the people than their paychecks.

These are just some things that come to mind. When we take the time to pray, the Holy Spirit will show us more things to pray for. Also we have our personal prayer language of speaking in tongues when we don’t know what to pray for (see Romans 8:26).

If we will pray in some of the ways I’ve suggested, for those in political positions of authority, God will answer our prayers. Like it says in 2 Timothy, He wants us to be able to lead a quiet and peaceable life in godliness and honesty and He told us His way to do it: Pray.

HANDLING CHRONIC PROBLEMS

THE FIRST STEP TO HANDLING CHRONIC PROBLEMS
I was emotionally distraught and I tried to ignore the problem and didn’t want to talk about it. I told myself I had already handled it. But it just kept brewing inside me. I tried to talk myself down but logic and reasoning didn’t work.

Keeping problems buried or bottled up inside of us isn’t healthy. They eventually come out. Unfortunately they can wreak havoc in our physical bodies and cause heart problems, nerve problems like shingles, and many other physical sicknesses and diseases. Pent-up emotions can distract and disrupt our minds and interfere with our spiritual life as well.

When we’re hurting, we actually need to talk out loud to the Lord or to a Christian friend who exhibits the Christ within—someone who doesn’t judge us. James 4:16 says you can “confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.”

It helps some people to write out what is bothering them even before saying anything out loud. Seeing it written in one’s own words sometimes helps identify the real problem.

When we keep things bottled up inside, it torments us. When we speak it out loud, we hear it ourselves and get a clearer picture of what we’re really thinking or feeling.

I was taught that if we talk out loud about things that are upsetting us, demons can hear and they use it against us. So I was afraid to voice my problems. But then I learned that I could pray to God to protect me and keep the evil spirits away while I’m talking.

Jesus Christ says to come boldly to Him to get things fixed: “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace” (Heb 4:15-16).

Jesus has experienced every emotional, mental and spiritual problem known to man. He understands every difficulty that any person has ever had or ever will have. There is a solution for every problem and the Lord Jesus is willing to give it without any guilt attached. He is full of mercy and full of love. “We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ” (1 John 2:1).

Ignoring problems doesn’t make them go away. We need to face each trouble straight on and obviate it by putting it into words. We take it to the Lord Jesus. He’s been in our shoes and He knows what to do.

We made Him Lord when we got born again. We should trust Him as our Lord, with every difficulty.

He tells us, God “hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18). And “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8).

Jesus isn’t retired. He isn’t just sitting up in heaven watching what’s going on down here. Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” We need to let Him continue to do His job in our lives. He has the solution to our every problem.

HEALING ISN'T ALWAYS AN INSTANT MIRACLE

My knee started hurting, then my thigh, then my back and I forgot to just ask for wisdom from the Lord on what it was and what to do to make it go away. I took ibuprophen and was handling it myself. The pain subsided somewhat, but it wasn’t going away. I persevered on my own for about two weeks and it was wearing me down. I finally woke up spiritually, took it to the Lord and asked my roommate to pray for me. I went off to work like every other day. Only this day I got the revelation of what was causing my pain and the revelation of how to get rid of it.

As I sat down on the floor to patch and touch up the baseboard and then crawled along to the next spot, I got the news flash – I was sitting in a scrunched down position with both legs tucked under me to the side and I was bent over. I put my legs on the other side and the same exact pinch happened on the other side and I realized I’d been sitting and crawling in this position for about two weeks, 7 hours a day. No wonder I was having pinches and pain. I made a conscious effort to change how I was positioning myself and the pain dissipated and is nearly gone.

Just because you don’t have an instant miracle of healing, doesn’t mean God’s not healing you. He’s given us many ways to get pain free and to get healed up.

God designed our bodies to heal themselves. If we take care of our bodies, natural healing comes faster.

Also a key I’ve learned is that certain sicknesses and diseases and demons too need specific environments to thrive in, so changing our bodily environment on the inside will cause the disease to die or the destructive evil spirit to leave.

There’s much to learn about healing but whenever we get sick there is always one thing we should do first and that’s take it to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him, “Should I go to the doctor? Ask someone to pray for me? Drink more water and take a couple aspirin? What should I do, Lord?”

We ask for His wisdom on what to do to get healed. God wants us to be healthy, so He’s glad to give us His wisdom.

James 3:17 says, “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” And James 4:2 says, “Ye have not, because ye ask not.” So we need to ask.

If we’re unsure about really hearing from the Lord, or unsure of what we think He answered, then we can ask a trusted Christian friend to corroborate or at least pray.

God says of himself, “I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Ex 15:27). Whether it be through a doctor, a prescription, a miracle, a dietary plan or just change your position on the floor, a healthy body and a sound mind (2Tim 1:7) are important in God’s good plan for our lives.

BE LOUDER THAN THE VOICES IN YOUR HEAD

I was starting to get symptoms of a cold. The symptoms just kept getting worse and the voice in my head said, “I’ve got a cold.” I hadn’t spoken anything out loud yet and instantly I knew I needed to shout: “The Bible says, by Jesus stripes I was healed, so I’m healed!” My cold symptoms were gone overnight.

Sometimes we need to shout louder than the thoughts in our head—drown them out with a shout of God’s word (the truth). For those of you who aren’t shouters, you can speak His truth in your most assertive “outside voice.” Authoritative self-talk or self-speak with God’s truths can have a powerful and positive effect on an apathetic, wandering, or bored mind. It can rescue and release us from being lazy, the victims of “maybe” or “I hope so.”  And it can put a stop to confusion.

There’s a great example of this principle in John 11 where Jesus shouted to Lazarus to come forth from the grave. He had all kinds of negative words and thoughts coming at Him. First of all the religious leaders were trying to shame Him in front of the people. Even Lazarus’ sisters were bothered by the fact that Jesus hadn’t come earlier, and they said so. It had been four days since he died and friends had gathered to grieve. What did they think and speak when Jesus showed up late and told them the dead Lazarus was going to live?

Since the Bible tells us Jesus was tempted in every way that we’re tempted, His mind would have been bombarded by all kinds of negative thoughts (Heb 4:15). The discord of inaudible voices in the air was thick, raucous and confusing. I’ve been in situations where I could almost hear people’s negative thoughts and accusations and I bet you’ve been in situations like that too.

But Jesus put his faith in what God told Him and in the midst of the confusion He stood in front of the tomb and He shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”  “And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, ‘Loose him, and let him go’” (John 11:43-44).

We need to be assertive with the truth we speak to ourselves. We are not victims of our environments. Our faith isn’t insipid or limp, but “strong in the Lord and the power of His might” (Eph 6:10).

Jesus shouted louder and with more authority than the voices of cultural norm; life returned to Lazarus. Against the thoughts in my head, I shouted God’s healing words to my cold symptoms; my good health returned to me. We are so blessed to have great spiritual power available to us. (1 Pet 2:24)

TAKING TIME TO CELEBRATE

(Photo is “Warrior Carolyn” on the rooftop with Branch and Sword J)
TAKING TIME TO CELEBRATE
I took my saw and clippers up the ladder and onto the roof. My pyracantha bush, which produces lots of red berries for the birds, was starting to send branches out over my roof. For about two months I’ve been looking at the branches grow and knew I had to get up there and cut them before the stems got too thick. I was thinking it would be kind of a hard job and really a hot one too.

Like so many things in life, once I got started I had a great time and when I was done it looked awesome and I was feeling pretty great about my accomplishment.

Ecclesiastes 3:13 says, “Every man should enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God.”

Even if we have a job where we get a paycheck, we all have other things we work at where our payment is something other than money. We can get paid with so many different things and we need to take a look at those things and appreciate ourselves. God appreciates us.

We aren’t supposed to just work and work and work until we exhaust ourselves. Most of us need to celebrate more. God says we’re supposed to ENJOY THE GOOD OF ALL OUR LABOR, not just the good from the paycheck we get from our day jobs, but the good we get from anything we work at. Do we get a good feeling of accomplishment? The satisfaction of a small victory? Do we get a thank you from someone? A pride in a new skill learned? Do we feel good about doing something we’ve been putting off for a while? There are many good results from our labors and lots of reasons to celebrate because we work at a variety of tasks.

Just think of some things you work at: Do you work at exercising? Eating well? Going to bed on time? Do you work at not gossiping? At paying your bills on time? Do you work at saying something kind every day? Do you work at spending more time with your kids? Do you work at learning new things?

Whatever we labor at, God says we need to take the time to CELEBRATE. It’s His gift to us.

“Hey, (fill in your name), great job! You did it!”

GOD'S RAVENS: UNPREDICTABLE AND UNIQUE

Now that the raven had all the cracker pieces neatly organized in his beak he hopped down to the bottom of his large enclosure and placed the neat stack to one side. He dug a shallow hole with his whiskered beak, put two pieces in the hole and raked some dirt over it so there was no sign of cracker at all—only dirt. He took the remaining pieces in his beak. Clippity clop hopping in raven fashion to the other side of his enclosure, he dug another hole and buried the rest of the crackers. I was in awe. Finally I understood the record in 1 Kings 17 about Elijah being fed by the ravens: The raven had already buried the food; it was just waiting for the time when God wanted it brought out to Elijah.

“And the word of the Lord came unto him [Elijah], saying, Get thee hence, and hide thyself by the brook. And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord and the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening” (1 Kgs 17: 3-6).

Now this may not have been an ideal situation and the bread and meat may have been a little crusty, but Elijah was thankful. God’s provision for him had been totally unpredictable and definitely unique.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” We need to trust that the Lord loves us and will provide for us even though our paths may be rocky at times. If we’ll look to the Lord Jesus to guide us through, it will work out better than we could possibly imagine.

When circumstances or decisions are hard, we can remember Isaiah 43:19 “I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”

We learn to expect the unpredictable and unique when it comes to God watching over us. When we keep our eyes on Jesus like it says in Hebrews 12:2 “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,” He will always have things set up for us to get us to the other side and to the good results He has for us.

When I got ready to write my first book, I had no idea of how to get started. The Lord was way ahead of me. Wendy, one of my closest friends, was publishing on-line for her job so she was able to help me. My other friend Maarit was an excellent editor and that was no coincidence either. God already had my girl ravens set up to bless me and I blessed them too. (Some people are afraid of ravens but I think they’re awesome!) When I decided to start an art career I “happened” to go into a place in Kansas City to buy a drawing pencil. I came out with a job: making molds in the sculpture foundry and gallery.

I moved across country and interviewed for a secretarial job. I ended up telling the woman I really would rather work in the arts. She gave me a client’s number and the first thing my new boss asked is if I knew how to make a mold for a sculptural piece. That started my 25 years of an ongoing career in the arts. Again no coincidence, but God preparing ahead of time just for me and I never saw it coming.

If we continue in our hearts to want to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, He will never, never let us down.

The ravens are already burying your crackers and steak.

Love, Carolyn
