JESUS THE INSTIGATOR  

When the dentist finished putting the composite filling in my tooth, the dental assistant held something in my mouth that looked like a fat pen. I heard it buzz a couple times. Then she took it out. What the heck was that?

The dentist explained that it is a blue light. He said it’s an instigator—it starts a chemical reaction in the two mixed materials for the filling.

In looking up the light spectrum I found that blue light helps boost alertness, heighten reaction times, elevate moods, and increase the feeling of wellbeing. It’s a high energy wavelength. I immediately related this to my Lord Jesus.

I thought of the verse where Jesus said: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus is like the blue light. He’s an instigator. He gets things started. He starts us out as a fresh Christian when we accept Him as Lord of our lives. His light cleanses us of all sin, guilt, and shame. Later in our spiritual walk when we need new inspiration or a fresh revelation, He’s there to give a jump start.

We call on Jesus to give us more light on a situation where we feel like we’re in the dark or confused or anxious. Jesus makes a way out of any aspect of darkness and will continue to guide us with His light if we let Him.

I’ve found that when I prayed for the light of Jesus to intervene in a situation, it triggered a domino effect in circumstances that I really had no control over, things I certainly couldn’t change or fix in the natural.

The Instigator, Jesus, gets things rolling and then we get to watch and see how awesome the results follow through, often in ways we would have never dreamed of or expected.

My dentist said the light instigator shining on the two parts of the composite material made it set up much faster than in the old days.

I want to be quicker to call on Jesus’ light in my situations. With His jump start, the results will most likely be speedier too.

“THE FOOLISHNESS OF GOD IS WISER THAN MEN”

The card Marie sent me for my birthday this year made me laugh so hard. I saved it and now and it’s the perfect picture for today’s message. The cat looks so goofy as he’s about to “boldly go to an age he’s never been before.” The Bible says: “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise” (1 Cor. 1:27). How foolish is it to think we can go into 2019 with a clean slate? But according to God’s Word, we can start fresh.

When God looks at us through Calvary, He doesn’t see 2018 or anything behind. WHAT??! That’s right. God is so thrilled that we believed Jesus took our sins away on the cross, that He forgives and forgets every time. He may look foolish to some, but does He care? Nope, Not one bit. Because “the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men” (1 Cor. 1:25).

God gave us His precious son Jesus, and He sees us through the blood of Jesus. His love is radical, unfailing love, and He sees us as his beloved sons and daughters right along with Jesus too. 1 John 3:2: “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”

So what about the past? What about 2018? Proverbs 13:12 tells us: “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.” We hoped for a lot of things in 2018 and they didn’t happen the way we wanted or as fast as we wanted, so we got discouraged, angry, and disappointed. We felt defeated and unstable, rejected, full of turbulence, and/or heaviness. Many lost hope because they weren’t seeing results.

But just because something is delayed, doesn’t mean it’s declined. When we feel like we’ve lost hope, our hearts get sick. But faith is the voice of victory, and that’s where we need to be: in faith, not sick at heart.

We need an exit strategy. If God forgives and forgets, then we need to do the same.

He tells us in Jeremiah 31:33-34: “They shall be my people. . . . They shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

God gives us the freedom to be able to accept a clean slate. How awesome is that? No need to keep battling the wounds of rejection, disappointment or discouragement. He’s opening new doors and large doors. “For a great door and effectual is opened unto me” (1 Cor. 16:9).

And all things are made new. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

I love that card that Marie gave me. As silly as that cat looks, he’s definitely got the right idea!

GOD CHOSE PEOPLE HE COULD TRUST

Last night I was thinking about the birth of Jesus, and I gave this thought to God: “How amazing it is that You had a solid family for Jesus to grow up in, to take care of Him as a baby, and to be responsible parents. They weren’t perfect, but they endeavored to do the right things, living honestly before You, and teaching Jesus the Bible.”

I was thinking that God chose people He could trust. Can He trust me? Can He trust you? With many of us, our hearts are good, but our actions don’t always show it. And yet, He still favors us like He did Mary. “And the angel said unto her, ‘Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God’” (Luke 1:30).

And when Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant before they had sex, he didn’t want to make a spectacle of her. He was “a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily” (Matt. 1:19).

“But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.’

“’And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus’” (Matt. 1:20-21).

God sent Jesus into our world to give us a better life. We want Him to trust us to do our best to live it and pass it on.

MIRACLE

MIRACLES

One of my very best friends at work came back to my area and gave me this beautiful necklace. I was amazed and so blessed that she thought to give me such a beautiful gift. What makes it even more special is that last night I decided to post the following miracle story. I guess God wants to remind us that miracles still happen, not by works, but by Faith in our God who does the work Himself.

As Jesus said: “The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works” (John 14:10).

This miracle story was on Fox News Monday, Dec. 17th:

“TEXAS GIRL’S INOPERABLE BRAIN TUMOR VANISHES

“In what seems like a Christmas miracle, the inoperable brain tumor of an 11-year-old girl in Texas has disappeared, and doctors say they don’t know why.

Roxli Doss was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, in June, as KVUE reported.

Her parents, Gena and Scott, prayed for a miracle and they got it. Her mom said: ‘It’s kind of our family thing that God healed Roxli.’

The girl’s medical team are equally in a state of disbelief.

‘It is very rare, but when we see it, it is a devastating disease,’ Dr. Virginia Harrod of Dell Children’s Medical Center told the news outlet. ‘You have decreased ability to swallow, sometimes vision loss, decreased ability to talk, eventually difficulty with breathing.’

‘When I first saw Roxli’s MRI scan, it was actually unbelievable,’ Harrod added. ‘The tumor is undetectable on the MRI scan, which is really unusual.’

Roxli will continue to undergo treatments, such as immunotherapy, but in the meanwhile, she is enjoying living her life, such as horseback riding.’”

A NOSE FOR GOD

Just a normal day as a nurse’s assistant in the hospital. I walked the antiseptic green hallway of the orthopedic floor and smelled that awful odor once again.

I was a baby Christian, just beginning to pay attention to how the Holy Spirit works in me. I could smell a killing cancer. At first, I thought it was just a smell that came with cancer, but when I asked, I found out that others couldn’t smell it. God was using my spiritual sense of smell to point out certain patients that needed special prayer and compassion.

What about our visual senses? I wanted to buy some new furniture. I prayed about it and I remember getting a mental picture (in color) of three pieces of furniture: two nice dark cherry chairs and a recliner in the same dark cherry with a leather seat. I kept seeing that picture every time I prayed for my furniture. It was the Lord’s way of assuring me that I could have it. In a couple of months, I found it on sale and was able to buy all three pieces without going into debt.

What about hearing? People hear the voice of the Lord in several different ways. He can talk in an audible voice, seeming so natural that the person might look around to see who’s there. I’ve had that happen a few times. When the Lord talks to us from within ourselves it can sound like our own voice or even the voice of someone we know. Often the Lord speaks to our spirit in a “still small voice” from deep within or we get a feeling of just knowing something that we hadn’t thought of ourselves.

A spiritual sense of taste? There are times when I've taken a taste of something and though it didn't annoy my regular taste buds, I knew I wasn't supposed to eat it. One time I got the message, but I took a couple extra bites anyway and felt bad all afternoon.

As for the spiritual sense of touch, there have been times when I've nearly jumped away from someone who wanted to touch me and pass on something bad. On the other hand, the spiritual sense of touch comes into play often. Sometimes, by the spirit, I know to just touch someone’s arm, to pass the love of God to them.  Nothing weird, just compassion and God’s love. I really don’t even think about it too much; I just do it.

The Christ in us will guide us and let us know the will of God in every situation. How does this work? Through the guidance of the written word and through the spiritual five senses we receive when we get born again and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 5:14 tells us:

“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

In other words, if we want to grow up, we need to exercise our spiritual five senses. As we practice using our spiritual five senses, we begin to “know” spiritual things about people and situations. It says in Luke 5:22 that “Jesus perceived their thoughts.” And in 6:8 “He knew their thoughts.” Knowing a person’s motivation, or the thoughts behind what they say or do helps us to get the Lord’s strategy for our part in handling the situation or person. Do we need this? I’d say a definite YES.

In a world where people twist words, and they don’t really say what they mean, the Lord Jesus knows already what’s in their hearts. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit in us, it’s easy for Him to let us know the truth of what’s really going on. This is not only vital in our personal lives but it’s an important tool in the body of Christ, to protect, enlighten and bless others as well.

If we are willing, the Lord will teach us more about what our spiritual senses can tell us and how to listen better. We will become more acutely aware of His presence, live on a higher spiritual level and be of more real help to those around us.

HOW TO SAVE RELATIONSHIPS WHEN THE GRUMPIES HIT

I was grumpy and crabby with my roommate Jane. Until we train ourselves otherwise, we often take out our frustrations on those closest to us. We figure they love us and will put up with our bad behavior. But what about when they don’t?

“I have feelings too,” she said. “When you do that, it makes me feel bad. You said mean things to me and I didn’t do anything wrong.” Well, it cut like a knife to the heart, but my immediate response was to get all defensive and instead of apologizing right away, I got even angrier. I think we get the maddest when we know we’re wrong. No one wants to be wrong. Why couldn’t she just have ignored it?

But she didn’t. She confronted me and that was the right thing to do.

How many times have relationships fallen apart because stabbing words have been ignored rather than confronted? The hurt turns into a festering, decaying puncture wound that may appear to go away, but only gets buried for a while and never really gets healed. Finally, all the little punctures and cuts connect and the resultant rotting wound is nearly irreparable and the original source of the problem is some distant fuzzy memory.

The source of my anger, for instance, had nothing to do with Jane, and I think this is often the case. Something becomes a trigger and we bring emotional responses from an incident in the past into the present when they don’t belong there.

Learning to act right is a constant process. Peter tells us, “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby” (Hebrews 12:11).

I was glad Jane confronted me. She made me see my sin and I felt bad about it. She didn’t deserve my wrath. We talked. She understood that I was acting out of the past and was lashing out at something totally not related to her. I told her I was sorry. She forgave me and I determined to act better.

Sometimes after we get confronted with our sins, we get all down on ourselves and pitiful, but the Lord is not one for pity parties. He says, “Lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed” (Heb 12:12-13). This is a really important point.

When we get lovingly confronted with our wrongs, we need to choke down our pride and straighten up our ways so that our relationships can be healed. If we don’t do this, the scripture says we are lame and could be turned out of the way. If we value our relationships we don’t want to get turned out of the way.

After our incident, the other day, neither one of us carried any residual bad feelings and went on to have a great day. Our friendship is peaceful and richer because of the honesty, boldness, and transparencies we share.

GIVING WHERE?

I recently learned that the huge amount of money flowing into the mega-churches is from their TV performances "sermons/whatever." Anyway, the actual networks have a set of rules - what the preachers can and can't speak about! So, if they want the TV audience, they are required to adhere to the Network's wishes even if it's contrary to the Holy Spirit's wishes. That was an eye-opener for me. So much hypocrisy and compromise. We need to reassess our motivation for giving in the body of Christ.

I am reading the book of Luke (24 chapters up to Christmas). I found a section of scripture in chapter 5 where Jesus healed the man of leprosy. He then told the man to go to the priest and offer what the Old Testament law said to offer for the healing deliverance God gave him.

“And it came to pass, when he [Jesus] was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, ‘Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.’

“And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, ‘I will: be thou clean.’ And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

“And he charged him to tell no man: ‘but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them’” (Luke 5:12-14).

This passage confirmed something I've been thinking about lately. Don’t we want our body of Christ today to be more like the 1st-century church and the book of Acts, and not the book of the mega-churches?

Many of God’s people have been duped into tithing to pay for airplanes (plural), fancy homes, expensive jewelry, etc.

We can't connect our finances to a ministry that is compromising the Holy Spirit's message just to keep their TV money coming in. This has hurt the finances, the health, and the spiritual understanding of so many people in the body of Christ. It snuck up on us and now it's got to stop.

But many have gone to the other extreme - give to no one. People are set in their minds to think that the gospel should be free, and it is, but like Jesus told the man who was healed, go give to the minister as an outward show of your thankfulness to God.

We've not heard that message or applied it because we've been so ripped off by the paradigm of how tithe money worked (or didn't really work) in the mega-churches. It worked fine for the preachers, but the people didn't receive what the preachers promised. 

I believe we need to give in thanksgiving to where we’ve been blessed. Whether it’s our local church, a Youtube messenger that opened our eyes or changed our lives, a healing we received from a friend in Christ, a letter or text message from a Christian brother or sister. Are you getting my point? I think we need to start thinking on a more “book of Acts” level when it comes to our giving: grassroots level. Honestly, I don’t know too many Christians who have more money than they can possibly use. So, let’s help each other. Who wouldn’t appreciate $5, $10, $20?

It’s like the old saying, “Put your money where your mouth is.” If we like something and we believe God brought it into our path, let’s be thankful with action and not just words. What if we all started doing that? It would sure free up the body of Christ into a new level of love and appreciation for each other.

You may already have this operating in your church, but not all churches operate that way.  

Anyway, it seems to be a dilemma, and I intend to be part of the solution, a few dollars at a time, the best I can. I believe this is the upstart of the true church body once again, the book of Acts.

DONKEY LOST HIS FOOTING

I was reading Luke chapter 3. Verse 4 says: “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his path straight.” I was thinking about this verse and it reminded me of this picture of the donkey. The poor donkey is so burdened down, he can’t get his feet on solid ground, and he can’t go anywhere. We need to repent and make appropriate changes so that we can make a straight path for the Lord straight to our hearts. Then we’ll be on solid ground, and we can move easily and peacefully. So, what do we need?

We need to drop off some of the things we think are okay, and get back to the simple, straight truths from the Word of God. We’ve allowed ourselves to compromise. We “self-medicate” with the scriptures we want to hear and we leave out the ones we don’t.  

We wonder why we’re not moving forward as quickly and smoothly as we want. Part of the reason is that we’ve piled up our carts with stuff that isn’t in the Bible, and we’re like the donkey that’s up in the air, bewildered because our feet don’t feel like they’re on solid ground.

We need to get back to some of the basics.

The Gospels, the Epistles, and the letters Paul wrote to leaders in the church are great places to find out the basics of how we are to act as Christians. The things mentioned in the Ten Commandments are still appropriate for today as well. Do you even know where to find them in the Bible? I didn’t, and I had to look them up just now as I was writing this article. Wow, I have to admit I’m certainly not following them as closely as I could be, and that’s what the Lord is showing me. Consider this:

Exodus 20: 1) And God spake all these words, saying, 2) I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5) thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6) and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7) Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10) but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11) for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the  Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

13) Thou shalt not kill.

14) Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15) Thou shalt not steal.

16) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

18) And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 

19) And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 

20) And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 

The donkey in the picture is out of control. We get that way sometimes. But we have a savior and helper, Jesus Christ. Return to Him and He returns to us. Only Jesus is called “The Prince of Peace.” He will help us get our carts back on the right road.

A MONTH ABOUT JESUS

Yesterday I saw a great suggestion for the build-up to Christmas. The book of Luke is 24 chapters, so if we read a chapter a day, we’ll be reading all about the life of Jesus right up to the day we celebrate His birth. I started last night and only got about halfway through the first chapter (got some catching up to do today 😊), but already I received explosions of revelations about John the Baptist and that’s just the beginning.

I hope you’ll join me in reading the book of Luke. We’ll be learning so much to share with each other. It’s exciting to have even a small part of the body of Christ reading and thinking about the same things. Let’s see what the Lord will do with that. I expect it will be amazing and a huge blessing in ways we can’t even imagine.
