GETTING RID OF THE RATS
I went to check the front yard and found a five-inch dead rat out by the oleander bush—yuk! A couple weeks ago I discovered what looked like a leaf nest in the backyard oleander. I put out bait and killed the rat. Yesterday I started digging out leaves around and inside the hollow place formed by the branches. The pile was just a bit lower than five feet high. It was a mess digging all that out, but I’m making progress. Now that I know what needs doing, I can keep up with it. I have three oleanders, so it’s important to keep them clean. I had no idea of what was going on in my yard behind my back—no one told me it wasn’t okay to keep leaf buildup under oleanders!

With the uplifted straight arms of the thin branches, it makes a perfect “fence” with the inside full of leaves. Then a hole can be made in the leaves. The hole goes in the top of the pile, then comes out at the bottom, so the rat can forage for food and water and the oleander makes the perfect home. I had no idea of the vermin that was trespassing on my property!

Sometimes spiritual rats enter our lives and we don’t even know they’re there. Things like unrighteous anger, jealousy, ungodly sexual cravings, and any number of other not-so-great things. They make themselves at home in our lives and begin to take over. So, what do we do?

We put our gloves on, get our tools out, and go for it. We start to tear away at the nest and break it apart.
At first, it’s so messy looking.

In the rat’s nest out front, there were the craziest things. Being on a busy street, and providing a place to sit, there were the expected things: Big Mac wrappers, beer cans, and plastic bags. But then there were the oddball things: a box cutter, an ID card, a couple of big rocks and a piece of granite countertop.

Like the rat’s nest, when we decide to clean up a potential spiritual problem in our lives, it seems to always start off messy and irritating. We start to clean up and other garbage gets in the way. We need more effort, more tools, and more time, but thank God we get started anyway. When I was pulling out leaves and other junk, I had to even cut some of the olive branches to make a clear path to get to the real mess that I was after.

And some rat nests take more time. I thought I’d have my physical rat nest cleaned up in a couple hours. Wow was I wrong! Instead of a couple hours, it’s more like a couple of days, maybe even a couple weekends—yuk!

But I’ll get it done. Where would I be in a month if I didn’t start now? Where will we be in our spiritual lives if we start to clean them up now? God’s Word says: “Though your beginning was small, your end will be very great” (Job 8:7).

There are five keys I see in this Rat event, that work for physical infestations and spiritual ones as well: 

1. RECOGNIZE that you have a problem. “So that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2 Cor. 2:11).

2. OBSERVE. Don’t be afraid to look the problem in the face. “And he answered, ‘Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (2 Kings 6:16).

3. BELIEVE what you see. Don’t try to ignore what you’re seeing, especially if the Lord shows you twice.

4. ARTICULATE it. Say what the problem is, aloud, or write it down, until you feel like you really have identified it. “And the Lord answered me, and said, ‘Write the vision, and make it plain’” (Hab. 2:2).

5. DO what needs to be done to get rid of the rat. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (Jas. 1:5). “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16).

Even Jesus had a rat in life. Judas Iscariot was one of His disciples. The other disciples didn’t recognize that he was a problem. Even up to the last minute, they didn’t RECOGNIZE, OBSERVE, BELIEVE, ARTICULATE, or DO. I’m not even sure Jesus knew from the beginning that Judas was going to choose to be a rat. In this situation, God’s wisdom was for Jesus to confront Judas and then let Judas decide what he was going to do. As we know, Judas decided not to repent but took his life instead.

On a personal note, of the five keys I’ve listed, number 3 was the most difficult for me to learn. I grew up in a church that taught that there was no devil, that everything came from God. So, when I saw bad things, I chose to try to ignore them. It was hard for me to BELIEVE that the Lord would be showing me bad things. But I learned that we need to believe what we see. God can’t work in us to get rid of bad things unless we are willing to acknowledge that they exist.

We always have the victory in Christ. “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Rom 8:37).

Gotta go tear down more rat nest.

INSPIRATION FOR ENDURANCE

Fred had good Christian teaching as a child. He’s much older now, and he says he doesn’t believe in God anymore.  Many people who started as Bible-believing children, come dangerously close to wanting to give up on the Bible later in life.

Traumatic events take place, and God gets blamed. We’re born again, and we think things should be going better for us. But sometimes they don’t go well at all. The truth is faithfulness isn’t something for the weak-hearted. It takes some real inner strength to stay faithful, and our faithfulness gets tested over and over throughout our lives. Faithfulness isn’t that easy sometimes, but is it worth it? For sure!

Hebrews 11:6 tells us that God rewards faith: “He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

In the big picture of things, our lives are short here on earth compared to our eternity. “As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more” (Ps. 103:15).

Though life may seem unbearable at times, God promises that “there hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Cor. 10:13).

In Old Testament terms, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning” (Ps. 30:5). You say, “That’s the longest night ever!” But God does promise joy in the morning. And God “is not a man that he should lie” (Num. 23:19).

In New Testament terms, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor. 4:17). I looked up the word “affliction” in the Greek. It is a thronging, crowding pressure. It’s narrow, burdened with anguish, persecution, and trouble. It comes from a root word meaning a rut or worn track. And isn’t that how the attacks come sometimes? We get in a rut of affliction, the same things over and over.

When the Bible says “light affliction” it doesn’t mean it’s no big deal. The word “light” has two meanings in the Greek. The older meaning is that the affliction is pushed like a torrential wind pushes or oars push in the water or how demonic powers push. We are all aware of what mighty winds can do to even the strongest of palm trees or buildings.

If you’ve ever watched the Olympic rowing teams, you know how powerful those oars cut through the water. And if demonic powers have pounded you at times, you know it’s no small matter.

This verse is telling us that the Lord understands that the afflictions are rough and hard to bear.

But the second meaning of the word “light” is just as we suspected. The afflictions we bear now are minimal, compared to the honor, praise, glory, and dignity we will have for eternity.

This is how Second Corinthians 4:17 is translated In the Amplified Version: “For our light, momentary affliction (this slight distress of the passing hour) is ever more and more abundantly preparing and producing and achieving for us an everlasting weight of glory [beyond all measure, excessively surpassing all comparisons and all calculations, a vast and transcendent glory and blessedness never to cease!”

God shows us how to endure in this life. Read the Bible and see the many examples of men, women, and children who confronted adversity and came out on the other side.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Heb. 12: 1-2).

We have Jesus’ help! Let’s use it. “Help me. Help me. Help me!” He will help us. So let’s do our best to stay faithful even through the hard things.

“THE EARTH HATH HE GIVEN TO THE CHILDREN OF MEN”

I held a small handgun. It was one of the lightest in weight and easiest to handle. That may have been true, but I was surprised at how I instantly felt the voice of power in that gun. It was not a toy. The manufacturer made the gun to be used in a certain way, with purpose. The things of the earth speak of what they are, and what they want. Once we realize that, we can choose to respect the voice and go with it, or we can choose to say no to the voice. God has given humanity the rule over earth things. “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men” (Ps.115:16).

As far as earth things having a voice, our plants tell us when we’ve neglected to give them what they need, and most of us are tuned into the messages from our pets as well.

But there are many inanimate earth things that also have voices. We all know that our cell phones and computers have a voice. They say: “Pay attention! You need to open me right now.” We’ve learned to answer no at work (mostly), and at other times we’ve said yes and found ourselves sucked in for hours.

Money has a voice. I have a funny story about that. Jane was working in the computer department at the University. One Monday afternoon she was sitting on a stone bench by the grass. She put her fanny pack with her wallet in it, at eye level on the column next to her. Jane won a large sum of money at the nickel slots over the weekend, and the money was still in her fanny pack. Her work schedule was pretty loose, and she was free to come and go as long as the work was done.

She looked over at her fanny pack, and the money started to talk. “Let’s get in the car and go over to Terrible Herbst Casino and play some slots.” Jane said: “Shut up in the name of Jesus Christ. We’re not going anywhere!” It was quiet for a few minutes; then it tried again: “Let’s go spend some money at Terrible’s.” Jane looked straight at that wallet and told it again: “Shut up in the name of Jesus Christ. We’re getting on that cart and going back to work!” And it never happened again, and Jane never forgot that incident.

I had an interesting experience with a Mazda rental car. The commercials on TV always displayed the words “Zoom, zoom” associated with the car. Then when I went to drive it, I swear, it was really difficult to get the car to slow down. It wanted to go at least 45mph no matter what, even in school zones. That car was a real battle, but I could see why the young people really liked it—"Zoom, zoom.”

What inanimate objects are talking to you and how are you reacting to what you hear?

Jesus said: “For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Take heed therefore how ye hear” (Luke 8:17-18).

The Lord is saying that we are responsible for knowing what’s going on. We need to be aware of the voices and make good strong choices. We’re in charge. Let’s listen carefully and decide wisely.

LAUGH AT THE DEVIL

I wrote this preach letter two years ago, but I needed it today and thought you’d like it too.

I opened the door to the hall closet and stepped down onto the wet carpet. I checked to see if one of the plastic water bottles leaked. Nope. Then I started to feel around on the carpet, and I had to move everything on the floor and pull back the carpet and liner to see what was going on. I followed the water through the closet and into the bedroom. Thank God the water was moving very slowly. I had to laugh at the devil.

Since before the beginning of the year I’ve been working on publishing volume two of my WINGS series, which I did in June, and just last week I published a smaller booklet, A Devil on Every Door Knob: And the Faith to Know What to Do About It. I have another booklet coming out on demons also. Obviously, Satan is upset with me because since the beginning of the year I’ve been attacked by different odd things. Finally, the devil pushed too far, and I’m not biting the bait. He’s the fool, and I have the wisdom of God.

This time, by revelation, I was told to laugh at the devil and speak to the demon bringing this on. I said, “Do you think you are interrupting my plans for the day by causing this to happen? Nope! This IS the plan for the day! I trust in Jesus. I’m living in the moment, and I am going to see the value of a good God and good Lord with me today. HA HA HA!”

In testing the various places that might have been leaking, I found out my second shower was working great. I had trouble with it draining a year ago and hadn’t needed to check it until now. I wouldn’t have known it was totally okay until having to check it in this situation. Ha! Ha! Also, I’d wanted to clean out the closet. Well now I have to, and I’m not in a hurry, so I’m at ease with it.

And the other great thing is that I think it may be a broken pipe in my sprinkler system and that is okay too because I’ve wanted to revamp the sprinkler system. It was put in in 1994 and has only had one minor repair in all these years. But it needs a little work, so now’s the time.

I’m laughing at the devil because what he thought was a great coup, is only going to give glory to God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I was reminded of how Jesus must have been laughing at the devil when He said goodbye to Hell after the devil killed Him and thought he’d gotten rid of Him. God raised his son Jesus from the dead and from Hell itself, to have everlasting victory and give that victory to us. 1 John 3:8 tells us: “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

I told the devil: “Nope, devil, you get no glory here! You didn’t even affect me. You actually helped execute God’s will! HA! HA! HA!”

I am so thankful to the Lord for my attitude change. At one time in my life, this kind of thing would really put me over the edge, and I’d drive myself and everyone around me crazy with my frantic nervousness and obsessive compulsion to fix everything right away.

But I’m different now. I believe Romans 8:28, that says: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” And I can say that even in the midst of problems, applying Philippians 4:6-7 is working for me. It says: “Be anxious for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Life brings challenges and problems. Our attitude brings resolve and solutions. The Bible really does have all the answers to life.

The leak is fixed, and I got a few other things done as well. God is always good and always on our side.

BELIEVE IN HIM, OR LIVE FOR HIM?

At the end of a video my friend Jerry sent me, there was a statement that arrested my attention: “The question is not, ‘Do you believe in God,’ but ‘Are you living for Him?’ The speaker confirmed the fact that the devil believes in God, and we see proof throughout the Bible. Believing in the true God is great, but living for Him takes faithfulness and determination to follow through to the end. Are we strong enough and are we willing? Yes, we are.

Living for God and yielding to the leadership of Jesus Christ, is the only thing that makes real sense in this world. Family is great, yes, and happiness is great, yes. But when it’s all over, what do we have to show for our lives, if we’ve said no to the opportunity to walk on the side of the one who created us and loves us more than anyone?

Let’s step up to Jesus today and ask what we can do for Him. Just for today. Do tomorrow when it gets here.

Matthew 6:34 says: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” And Psalm 118:24 tells us: “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

BLIND AMBITION

BLIND AMBITION

The dictionary defines “conscience” as “the internal recognition of right and wrong, with the compulsion to do right; a moral judgment that opposes the violation of a previously recognized ethical principle.” But “blind ambition” will disregard conscience, and go for what it wants, no matter what. The Bible tells us that “in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron” (1 Tim. 4:1-2).

If we continue to act against what our conscience tells us, we get burned; repetition makes the “skin” numb like scar tissue, and we are no longer sensitive to what’s right and wrong. We’ll do what we want, rather than what God wants.

The end does not justify the means. God wants us to stay righteous today, not later when we’ve accomplished what we think we want. Ambition is good, but only under the distinct leadership of the Lord.

The news is riddled with horror stories of what many of the actors in Hollywood, singers, and sports figures have compromised to get to the top. Morals, ethics, and a sense of what’s right and wrong go right out the window because being a great star is what they want more than being a great person.

People get tempted to compromise on morals because they think they’ll lose something, like a job promotion, or a boyfriend or girlfriend, for instance. We are so afraid of losing something that we do things we know are wrong.

But honestly, we don’t have anything worthwhile to lose, if we endeavor to live with a good conscience toward God. Hebrews 13:5 says: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” People misunderstand the part that says be content with what you have. They think it’s referring to our present job, our physical possessions, etc. But what God is talking about is what we really have: every desire fulfilled by him. Psalm 37:4: “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

The Apostle Paul gives us a great goal: “Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day” (Acts 23:1). And when he was accused, in Acts 24:16 he answers: “Herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offense toward God, and toward men.”

No matter the circumstance, big or small, let’s keep our moral compass on the truths found in God’s Word, and decide to do the right thing, without compromise. It’s God’s job to bring us to the perfect things for us always.

GOD’S MERCY IS GREATER THAN OUR SINS

In Old Testament Times there was a payment, a sacrifice, to make for sins so the people could get right with God. They had to sacrifice their animals, their food, the things that made up their lifestyle: the things they liked, things of personal value to them. OMG, I can’t even imagine if we had to make a personal physical sacrifice for every sin we commit in a week! Every half-truth, mean thought, snide remark: There goes the cell phone, the laptop, the truck, the best friend, our beloved pets. OHH NOOO! If we had to make a personal sacrifice every time we sinned, we’d all end up homeless and poor in a very short time.

But God had mercy on us, and He sent His son Jesus to pay for everything up front. Romans 3:10 says, “As it is written: None is righteous, no, not one.” “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (v. 23).

God loved us so much He sent His son to give us a new way. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). And Jesus loved us so much; He said: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Romans 5:8 tells us: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God no longer wants sacrifices from us; He wants us to accept what He did in sending Jesus. He is so happy when we believe in Jesus. Jesus said: “But go ye and learn what that meaneth, ‘I will have mercy, and not sacrifice:’ for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Matt. 9:13).

Jesus Christ, having no sin at all, “had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins” (Heb. 10:12).

What if we did have to sacrifice something we like, every time we sin? Yikes. But seriously, God does have one requirement that many of us have forgotten. He requires that we repent. That means we need to take a few minutes each day (most likely) to acknowledge to the Lord, that we’ve sinned. We may even thank God and the Lord Jesus for making the sacrifice for us instead, and ask Him to help us get better at not sinning.

First John 1:8 reminds us: “If we say that we have not sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” But then this is the absolute mercy of God: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

LIVING FREE

Ground zero for any human being is not the soul, but the Spirit. That’s why, when a person says they are trying to “find themselves” or doing some deep soul searching, they won’t be truly satisfied until they look at the Spirit. God says in Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart for my holy purpose.” To have true liberty and delight in this world, we need to know ourselves as a Spirit person and be led by the Spirit.

John 3:8 says: “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” When we allow the Spirit to rule, we go wherever it pleases. Second Corinthians 3:17 tells us: “The Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” And Galatians 5:1 tells us we should “stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.”

When we believed in God’s son, God Himself made us alive spiritually in Him. At that moment, He took the documents that listed all the bad things against us and folded it in half so no one could see it. Then it was nailed to the cross. It talks about this in Colossians.

It was a custom that any person who didn’t pay their debt, had papers written up against them. The papers were put up in a place in the city where everyone could see. But if some benevolent person came along and paid the debt, the paper was folded in on itself, and no one could see the debt. It was gone, paid for. That’s how it is when a person gets born again of Holy Spirit. All debt is paid, and the person is free.

“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened [made alive] together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross” (Col. 2:13-14).

Once we’re free, and we’re endeavoring to walk by the Spirit, we’re like the wind. We are free to obey the Spirit and go where we’re guided. Colossians 2:16: “Let no man, therefore, judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holyday, or of the new moon,” where you hang out or what you do.

No one can judge you, only Jesus. Paul says he doesn’t even judge himself: “But with me, it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self” (1 Cor. 4:3).

Yes, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Cor. 5:10). And “Every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Rom. 14:12). We can’t do this by our worldly reasoning and mental discipline. Colossians 1:27 tells us we have Christ in us: “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” We can only be free like the wind when we let Christ take charge of our lives. We invite Jesus Christ into our hearts. We are a three-part being: body, soul (mind and emotions), and Spirit. With Christ in our hearts, the Bible tells us the Spirit of Christ can be in every part of us.

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5:23).

1 Corinthians 2:16 tells us: “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.” When? When we invite Him in. And the same goes for our bodies. John G. Lake believed this triune salvation was real. He believed the Spirit of Christ was in every part of his body. He tested this out with the scientists by having them put smallpox on his hand and watch it through a microscope. The smallpox microorganisms died. He did this with many other highly contagious diseases and every time Spirit would kill the physical evil. (I’ve put a reference for John G. Lake’s teaching and documentation at the end of this article so you can check it out for yourself.) 

As we read about Jesus Christ, do we ever see that he battled any kind of sickness or disease in His body, which was flesh just like ours? No. Did he have emotions? Yes, but they were appropriate to the cause. God wants us to accept the same wholeness, and it’s His will. Let’s receive it. Read it in the scriptures and believe.

Paul tells us: “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh is lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law” (Gal. 5:16-18). We are not under the natural laws of disease, or under the laws that govern how people’s minds work. We only accept the law of the Spirit of Christ, the law that bypasses or utilizes the other natural laws to bless us. Our real self is in the Spirit.

Verse 25 of Galatians 5 says: “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8: 31-38).

Let’s believe it, receive it into ourselves, and act like it! We keep reminding ourselves of who we are and that there is no devil spirit, no demon who is bigger than we are, spiritually. Like Jesus, we stand. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord” (Is. 54:17).

And with people, we walk in the Spirit. “And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17). And “We walk in love” (Eph. 5:2).
