WONDERFUL SPIRITUAL EVIDENCE

For a few weeks now, I’ve been mulling over a chapter about speaking in tongues for my next book. Then one day last week, one of my Facebook friends posted a list entitled “The Benefits of Speaking in Tongues.”

 

In Genesis 41:32, God shows us one of His universal truths when Joseph tells Pharaoh: “and for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.”

 

I believed this principle the first time I heard it, and I’ve seen God work this “double” principle over and over. So, when Tracy put the list of benefits up on Facebook, I took heed, knowing God was confirming His desire for me to take a closer look at some of the “whys” of speaking in tongues. So, I did.

 

The one that really stood out to me was number 7: “To have the Spirit bearing witness with our spirit – Romans 8:16.” The whole verse reads: “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

 

So, what does that verse really mean? Whenever I want to understand more about the deeper meaning of a scripture, the first place I go is to a Concordance, where I can look up the definitions of the individual words in that particular verse.

 

In this verse, ‘Spirit’ (pneuma) is capitalized, and is talking about the highest Spirit, God!  The next word, ‘itself’ is doubling down on the capitalized “Spirit.” It’s emphatic!! In other words, GOD HIMSELF is the subject, and HE is doing the action.

 

And what is the action? He is “bearing witness.” The phrase “bearing witness,” in the original Greek, is the word “symmartyreō.” It means “testifying unto, to corroborate by evidence, to bear joint witness together, in agreement.”

 

In agreement with what? “God agrees “with our spirit.” God Himself, as the highest spiritual entity, agrees with each of our born-again spirits. How do we know that? We know it for sure when we speak in tongues, because we could not speak in tongues without a direct spiritual connection with God Himself. When we speak in tongues, it is a joint effort between the person and God.

 

The act of speaking in tongues is a spiritual thing that you and God do together, both giving evidence of spiritual truth. The holy spirit in you that you received when you got born again receives the exact right words from God Almighty, and your part is to speak the words out almost simultaneously as your holy spirit is receiving them.

 

We see that Jesus met with his disciples before he ascended and showed them how to begin to speak in tongues: “He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit!’” (John 20:22AMPC). The Greek word for “breathed on” means to “blow on, or breathe out” as you do when you speak. And the word “receive” here means “to take beginning, to prove anything, to make a trial of, to experience.”

 

So, Jesus is showing them that they begin by believing, by breathing out, breathing out the words, beginning to prove the presence of the holy spirit in them, and making a try at it, experiencing the wonderful connection with God through their own holy spirit inside them, speaking out in tongues the wonderful works from God.

 

And what does this spiritual togetherness prove? Why does God want us to speak in tongues? Because it proves the last part of Romans 8:16: “that we are the children of God.” So, every time we speak in tongues, even just a phrase or two, we are experiencing a direct connection with our God, our Father.

 

We are the sons and daughters of the Most High God, and we’ve got the words to prove it.  We’ve got the evidence every single time we choose.

 

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Rom. 8:16).

On my walk home from grade school, I would sing songs in a made-up language. Later in life, I realized this was singing in tongues. Often when children get born again, they exhibit the freedom to yield to the Holy Spirit by speaking or singing in their new God-given language. When people in the New Testament times were born again, they were also inspired to speak or sing in a different language than they normally spoke. The Bible says speaking with tongues was an outward sign of something spiritual that had happened on the inside.  

 

There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about speaking in tongues. People think a spirit takes over, and it’s like in the movies where a person’s eyes roll back in their head, they get possessed, and then they speak in a different language and are totally unaware of it. But it’s just the opposite. The person speaking or praying in tongues completely controls their actions. The Spirit from within gives the words, but the person does the speaking. They can start or stop anytime, like speaking in their native language.

 

In the Old Testament times, the Spirit of God was “on” a person. In Jesus’ time on earth, the Spirit of God was “with” them. Jesus told his disciples that after he returned to the Father in Heaven, they would soon have the opportunity to receive the holy spirit to dwell “in” them. Then Jesus told them how they could build up that seed of His Spirit within.

 

“And he [Jesus] said unto them, ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:15-16).

 

Jesus told them they would speak in new tongues. Why would they need that? Jerusalem and that part of the world weren’t peaceful, much like the world is not peaceful now. The believers need to grow that spirit in them as much as they can, to be spiritually strong, to be peaceful, and to be able to pray perfectly for even those things they knew nothing about. We need to be spiritually sharp on the inside to handle the things happening on the outside.  

 

The devil is getting bolder with his attacks, but we can get stronger spiritually by speaking in tongues. That’s what the Bible says: “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself” (1 Cor. 14:4). The Greek word for “edifieth” means “to be a house-builder, build up, embolden.” 

 

Praying in tongues also builds up our faith. “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20). We want to have big faith when it comes to caring for ourselves, our families, our friends, our neighborhoods, our world. Bigger faith action is needed, and speaking with tongues helps facilitate that.

There are going to be problems with people and circumstances where we’ll want to see solutions, but we don’t really know what we should pray for. Romans 8:26-27 tells us: “The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

 

The Greek translation reads: “The Holy Spirit maketh intercession for us in groanings that cannot be uttered in articulate speech.” Articulate speech refers to our known languages. We don’t know what God knows, but the Holy Spirit within us does. The Holy Spirit gives us the words in another language so that we can pray the perfect will of God for any person or in any situation.

 

We need to let our adult selves be more like children, who so easily respond to singing or speaking in an unknown language. Just ask the Lord to give you your spiritual language, then you breathe in, believe to receive the words, and start to speak them out. That’s how Jesus taught his disciples to speak with new tongues. 

 

Jesus told the disciples to breathe in, then speak out the words the Holy Spirit gives. They will be a different language than you already know, so don’t think it’s weird just because it sounds odd to you. “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 20:22). The original Greek word that is translated here as “receive” means “to take hold of, to take what is one’s own, to take to one’s self. It means “to receive what is offered, not to refuse or reject, but to claim and procure for one’s self. God doesn’t force anyone to speak in tongues. He wants us to receive the gift as His connection: His heart to ours.

 

If you want more documentation, read the book of Acts and see how often it comes up. Regular people all over spoke in tongues.

 

The more you speak, the more comfortable you will be. Once you start speaking in tongues out loud, you can start speaking in tongues in your head, just like you would talk to yourself silently. This way, you can speak in tongues while you’re at work or the gym or just going about your regular daily routines, without people wondering about what the heck you’re doing.  

 

There are many other great benefits to speaking in tongues that you can read about in the book of Acts and the Epistles. And of course, as you speak with tongues, you’ll also experience yourself growing spiritually in your daily life.

 

We can be better equipped as ambassadors for our Lord when we do what Jesus instructed: “They shall speak with new tongues.” He said: “Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:39). So, let’s let it flow.

Did you have a secret language you spoke or sang songs with when you were young? Can you do it now? Of course you can. And the more, the better. When people in the New Testament times got born again, they also were inspired to speak or sing in a different language than they normally spoke in. The Bible says speaking with tongues is an outward sign of the miracle God did in us when He sent his spiritual seed to live in us and gave us everlasting life with Him.

People think a spirit takes over, and it’s like in the movies where a person’s eyes roll back in their head, they get possessed, and then they speak in a different language and are totally unaware of it. But it’s just the opposite. The person speaking or praying in tongues is in complete control of their actions. The Spirit from within gives the words, but the person does the speaking. In wanting my faith to grow, I was recently urged by the Lord to add Jude 20 to the set of scriptures Jane and I say out loud on our way to my work: “Building yourselves up in your most holy faith, by praying in the Holy Spirit.” That’s praying in tongues.

Note: I learned about speaking in tongues in a Bible class I took almost 50 years ago. But I’d be interested in how any of you individuals or leaders have led people into speaking or singing in tongues in more recent times. It’s such a valuable tool!

A BETTER LIFE

    

A BETTER LIFE

Lord, I pray for your healing presence in our nation and around the world. I pray that this day there will be new people who accept Jesus as Lord and get born again of Your Spirit. I pray for those who are born again to be filled with the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues and prophecy. I pray that Your people study the Bible and receive dreams, revelations, and insights more than ever before. I pray for wisdom, understanding, and boldness to apply what we learn.  In Jesus name, Amen.

I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord when I was around eight years old. But my life didn’t change dramatically until I got filled with the Holy Spirit at age 21 and began to study the Bible, not just read it. I spoke in tongues as evidence of the holy thing that was in me, and though I’d read the Bible through many times before, I began to understand it much better. I started to hear the Lord’s voice in my everyday life.

When I went to my mom’s a little over a week ago, I saw my high school picture. Wow! I remembered how alone and depressed I was. After I got filled with the Holy Spirit, I still got attacked by depression, but I could fight it. I am supposed to be a happy person.

Many people discover that the person God made them is the opposite of what they were before they got born again and filled with the spirit. The new us is pretty awesome.

SWEET

SWEET

Sometimes God’s revelation is like a suspense/mystery story: He gives us an odd trail of clues, one by one; then suddenly they all come together and it makes sense—the case is resolved. That’s how it was these past few weeks with some unsolved mysteries I wanted answered about speaking in tongues. I watched a snippet of a video where a guy was saying it should be “speaking with tongues,” not “speaking in tongues” but I looked it up and both prepositions are used in the Bible. I wasn’t familiar with using the “with” version, and that was the Lord’s first clue for me.

Then, circumstances came up and I wanted to use this kind of speaking in tongues prayer more often. I needed a reminder in the physical realm to trigger my mind, so I contacted my brother who is involved with a ministry that used to sell red coffee cups with the anagram S.I.T. on them, which stands for Speak In Tongues. He told me they didn’t sell them anymore. That was clue number two. Okay, what to do now?

I still had the urgent need to speak in tongues more. I was being barraged with the temptation to fixate on how twisted and unsound people have become and my thoughts would keep circling around this. I knew I didn’t want these thoughts to overtake me. The Bible says speaking with tongues is rest to the soul. I desperately needed that rest, and not the agitation I was experiencing in my mind and emotions.

Jesus told me I should speak in tongues, because that way I’d get His wisdom and I would be trusting His answers to my prayers. I could bypass the AK47s of thoughts blasting my mind. If I was thinking about speaking in tongues, I couldn’t be thinking about people.

I’m not a person who is great at speaking with tongues automatically so I needed a stimulus as a reminder. Because I couldn’t get the cups from my brother, I needed a different solution. Clue number 3: Make one myself.

The next breadcrumb was the still small voice of God to my spirit: “Study the verses you know about speaking with tongues.” (Clue number 4). So I did. I went to 1 Corinthians 14. Verse 2 says: “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God.” Verse 5 says: “I would that ye all spake with tongues.” Verse 15 says: “I will pray with the spirit.” And in verse 18 Paul tells the church: “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all.” Verse 28 tells us this fact about speaking in tongues: “Let him speak to himself, and to God.” WOW, spirit words to myself—how healing is that?!

Then the Lord brought it all together with a new level of revelation on this kind of prayer. He told me to write down the acronym, S.W.T. (for “speak with tongues”). Then I was to say it. But when I said it, it came out sounding like “swit,” which was actually the cool part! I wrote it down and realized it had the “W” for “with tongues,” and the “I” for “in tongues.” Then just as quickly the next three words came: SWAT, SWEAT, SWEET. So now I had: “SWIT, SWAT, SWEAT and SWEET.”

SWIT is what it is: speaking with tongues and/or speaking in tongues.

SWAT is like a SWAT team that goes in to take care of business. This new level of speaking in tongues, for me, and probably for you too, is not sitting around in an easy chair, but aggressively going after the enemy—SWAT—like swatting a gnat or a fly, to kill it. Spiritual prayer by way of speaking in tongues is a weapon against the enemy, whether that enemy is outside or inside us.

The great thing is that this prayer is from God, so our own sarcastic ways or bitter or vengeful selves don’t get to be in the way! Speaking with tongues is absolutely perfect prayer, because God gives the words. It’s spiritually and naturally powerful. Romans 8:26-27 tells us a great truth about this kind of praying:

“The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

When we SWAT the enemy with God’s words, not our own, it’s just way more effective!

SWEAT indicates work. At the shop on Friday, I watched Hector and Mike move pieces of drywall weighing 120 pounds each, in 108-degree weather. When Hector finished, his whole face was wet. Working up a sweat is invigorating. Athletes, ironworkers, carpenters, miners, plasterers, fighters—we all should know what it means to work and sweat. It feels good to break through and get all the toxins out!

And the reward is:

SWEET! It’s refreshing, like a cool shower. Victory is SWEET! –Won through battle and sweat – true victory to those who are courageous and willing to battle and make sacrifices if necessary for the sake of truth and freedom in Christ Jesus.

SWIT.   SWAT.   SWEAT.    SWEET.       This is my call to arms, a challenge to excel. Think of speaking in tongues, or speaking with tongues in a new, more aggressive, battle-ready frame of mind. I’m excited about the Sweet rewards and I think you will be too.

The other day I was listening to a friend who knows a lot about the clandestine motives and hidden background to world events, things the general public does not know. There are people who orchestrate international tragedies, as well as national ones and even down to the state and local levels. It can be horrifying, maddening and depressing. Religion might say, “Just don’t look at it.” That may be okay for some, but if we look at the Bible, we see that more often than not, God’s people were involved on the grass roots level of life. They faced the cultural and political fields head on and dealt with it.

In the Old Testament times, the Spirit of God was “on” a person. In Jesus’ time on earth the Spirit of God was “with” them. Jesus told His disciples that after He went back to the Father in Heaven, they would have the Spirit of God “in” them. Then He told them how they could build up that seed of His Spirit within. Remember, it’s called “being born again.” A baby has all the raw material, but needs to grow. That’s how Christ-in-us is.

“And he [Jesus] said unto them, ‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

‘And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.’

“So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God” (Mark 16: 15-19).

Jesus told them they will speak in new tongues. Why would they need that? Well, Jerusalem and that part of the world wasn’t exactly in a peaceful place, much like the world now is not in a peaceful place. They would need to build up that Spirit in them as fast as they could, to be able to be strong and powerful and peaceful and trusting. They would have to be spiritually sharp on the inside, to be able to righteously handle the things happening on the outside.  

Speaking in tongues is something that is spiritual “Wheaties,” or a power energy drink to the Christ-in-us.

The Apostle Paul said: “When a person speaks in another language, he helps himself grow” (1 Cor. 14: 4).

Jude corroborates this: “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 20). “Praying in the Holy Spirit includes speaking in tongues. We need to be built up spiritually, just like the believers of the first century church.

I want to remind those of us who know how to speak in tongues, to do it more. For those who want to do it and don’t know how, it’s not hard at all. Thank the Lord for what He’s given you. He’s the one who said you can do it.

If you need more documentation, read the book of Acts and see how often it comes up. Regular people all over the book of Acts, spoke in tongues. Jesus told the disciples to breathe in, then speak out the words the Holy Spirit gives. They will be a different language than you already know, so don’t think it’s weird just because it sounds odd to you.

The more you speak, the more comfortable you will be. Once you start speaking in tongues out loud, probably in private, you can start speaking in tongues in your head, just like you would talk to yourself silently. This way, you can speak in tongues while you’re at work or at the gym or just going about your regular daily routines, without people wondering about what the heck you’re doing.  

There are many other great benefits to speaking in tongues. Do you want to understand things better from God’s point of view? How about when you don’t exactly know what a person needs and you want to pray for them? The Word of God says speaking in tongues is for that. It’s perfect prayer. (See Romans 8: 26).

First Corinthians 14:22 says speaking in tongues is a sign to unbelievers. It’s also a sign to us. Anyone who takes the time to learn a different language knows it takes time and effort and memorization. When we speak in tongues, the words just come out. Maybe it’s a little slow at first, but not necessarily. In a very short time, it flows easily.

But the biggest affect you’ll see from speaking in tongues is that you’ll see yourself growing spiritually. You’ll experience more insight in your life, more power, more confidence, more trust, more might, more energy, all of which come from the spiritual fire getting stronger and bigger within you. Worth it? Yes, very worth it!

In a treacherous world we can be better equipped as ambassadors and warriors for our Lord when we agree with Jesus: “They shall speak with new tongues.” When a person speaks in tongues, “he helps himself grow.”
