A NOSE FOR GOD

A NOSE FOR GOD

Just a normal day as a nurse’s assistant in the hospital. I walked the antiseptic green hallway of the orthopedic floor and smelled that awful odor once again.

I was a baby Christian, just beginning to pay attention to how the Holy Spirit works in me. I could smell a killing cancer. At first, I thought it was just a smell that came with cancer, but when I asked, I found out that others couldn’t smell it. God was using my spiritual sense of smell to point out certain patients that needed special prayer and compassion.

What about our visual senses? I wanted to buy some new furniture. I prayed about it and I remember getting a mental picture (in color) of three pieces of furniture: two nice dark cherry chairs and a recliner in the same dark cherry with a leather seat. I kept seeing that picture every time I prayed for my furniture. It was the Lord’s way of assuring me that I could have it. In a couple of months, I found it on sale and was able to buy all three pieces without going into debt.

What about hearing? People hear the voice of the Lord in several different ways. He can talk in an audible voice, seeming so natural that the person might look around to see who’s there. I’ve had that happen a few times. When the Lord talks to us from within ourselves it can sound like our own voice or even the voice of someone we know. Often the Lord speaks to our spirit in a “still small voice” from deep within or we get a feeling of just knowing something that we hadn’t thought of ourselves.

A spiritual sense of taste? There are times when I've taken a taste of something and though it didn't annoy my regular taste buds, I knew I wasn't supposed to eat it. One time I got the message, but I took a couple extra bites anyway and felt bad all afternoon.

As for the spiritual sense of touch, there have been times when I've nearly jumped away from someone who wanted to touch me and pass on something bad. On the other hand, the spiritual sense of touch comes into play often. Sometimes, by the spirit, I know to just touch someone’s arm, to pass the love of God to them.  Nothing weird, just compassion and God’s love. I really don’t even think about it too much; I just do it.

The Christ in us will guide us and let us know the will of God in every situation. How does this work? Through the guidance of the written word and through the spiritual five senses we receive when we get born again and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 5:14 tells us:

“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

In other words, if we want to grow up, we need to exercise our spiritual five senses. As we practice using our spiritual five senses, we begin to “know” spiritual things about people and situations. It says in Luke 5:22 that “Jesus perceived their thoughts.” And in 6:8 “He knew their thoughts.” Knowing a person’s motivation, or the thoughts behind what they say or do helps us to get the Lord’s strategy for our part in handling the situation or person. Do we need this? I’d say a definite YES.

In a world where people twist words, and they don’t really say what they mean, the Lord Jesus knows already what’s in their hearts. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit in us, it’s easy for Him to let us know the truth of what’s really going on. This is not only vital in our personal lives but it’s an important tool in the body of Christ, to protect, enlighten and bless others as well.

If we are willing, the Lord will teach us more about what our spiritual senses can tell us and how to listen better. We will become more acutely aware of His presence, live on a higher spiritual level and be of more real help to those around us.

HEARING GOD'S MESSAGE - TWICE AND IT'S ESTABLISHED

HEARING GOD’S MESSAGE – TWICE AND IT’S ESTABLISHED

We all want to hear from God. But how do we learn to recognize His voice? We practice “listening” to our spiritual five senses. God uses these to speak to our hearts, minds, and emotions. But He often puts in a bonus by giving us the DOUBLE. Genesis 41:32 tells us: “And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.”

Let me give you an example that happened to me. I heard a teaching about a certain type of demon that I didn’t know anything about—the teacher called it a water spirit. Since I’m very interested in removing demons from God’s people, I thought about looking further into these water spirits. A few days went by, and I thought about it, but I didn’t do anything. Then when I was looking for a picture to go with one of my posts, the photo with the ocean is what I found.

At first, when I looked at this picture, I was hesitant about using it. I thought the point of view, so close to the edge, and the waves coming up over the rocks was kind of scary looking. But immediately God reminded me of the scripture: “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men” (Ps. 115:16). God was letting me know that I needed to study this water thing further.

What I want you to see is that God doubled His instructions for me: First by HEARING (the teaching), then by SEEING the photo. I’m sure He’s done this for you too. When we see this kind of thing in the Bible, we can expect God to do it for us too. We need to keep our spiritual senses open to His revelations. When God doubles up on a revelation to us, it means we need to pay attention. God gave the same dream to Pharaoh twice to “establish” it. The word used for “establish” in Genesis 41:32 means “fixed, prepared, settled, made firm, set up.”

God may work through hearing, seeing, tasting, touching, smelling, or a general sense of just knowing. Let’s be sensitive to those spiritual senses, and the DOUBLE, and respond to what the Lord has for us.

HOLY HUNCHES FROM A LOVING GOD

HOLY HUNCHES FROM A LOVING GOD
I woke up one night picturing a bat with big ears. Bats respond to vibrations much like we are to respond to the vibrations from God Almighty. These vibrations, or “holy hunches,” come from the realm of the unseen, but all Christians have access to them. There are times when we “just feel like” we should talk to a particular person, show up at a different time, take a different route—these nudges will come more often when we learn how to recognize and respond to them. They are communications to us from our Father God, beyond the things we perceive with our natural five senses.

Our loving God gave us spiritual five senses so that He could communicate with us. We can see, hear, taste, smell, and touch the unseen. We are God’s sons and daughters when we believe in Him and take Jesus Christ as our Lord. John 4:24 tells us: “God is a spirit.” So when we believe what God told Paul to write in Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved,” God miraculously puts of His spirit into us, so we are forever connected to Him. Spirit communicates with spirit.

My friend Adrienne wrote: “God is ever-present. Being mindful of this by actively listening for Him is the key to walking by the spirit. Even minor changes in schedule—that show of humility—keeps our connection with God strong. We may never see the results of our obedience; like the car accident that doesn’t happen because of our obedience to be elsewhere. We all wonder at times how to tell if we are on the right track. The only way is to play it through and see what you get. Rejoice in the victories, and when it doesn’t go so well, ask God how to do better.”

I think of soldiers, firefighters, undercover agents, 911 operators; they are trained to listen to their hunches and respond quickly. People’s lives depend on it.

God gives us holy hunches, vibrations, ideas, feelings, or nudges. Since these communications are in the spirit realm, it’s a little hard to explain them in our human terms. People use different words for how God works with them in spiritual communications. Jesus says of the shepherd in John 10:4: “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

We want to know His voice. Like Adrienne said, “The only way is to play it through and see what you get. Rejoice in the victories and when it doesn’t go so well, ask God how to do better.”

In Luke 11:11 Jesus says if a child asks his father for bread, the father won’t give him a stone. “If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

Our Father God is a loving God. When we’re asking Him for a more spiritual walk, He’s going to give us what we ask for. “Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11: 12-13).

With the gift of the holy spirit, we get the forever access to our creator, and the communication for a successful life here on earth before we go to join Him, and Jesus Christ, and all the believers forever in heaven.

MORE THAN A STILL SMALL VOICE

This is so amazing! I knew that today the Lord wanted me to share more about recognizing how He communicates with us by our spiritual 5 senses. Then I opened up my e-mail and it was confirmed by this awesome message I just got from my friend Yvonne:

One of the most practiced evidence I have in listening to God is in visions. When myself or someone else is looking for something they lost, I ask God to show me where it is & He shows me where it is. This never fails! I’m learning to ask God FIRST to save me a lot of time & trouble. His voice is always soft & patient....and I know He is guiding me & I should trust Him only. But there are times when I’m with toxic people or situations that put me to the test & I don't always heed His voice. AND I do pay for it. God bless you, girlfriend!”

The Lord can communicate through all of our 5 senses. In Yvonne’s situation of looking for lost things, the Lord shows her through pictures. I know several people who get the Lord’s answers this way.

When I was first introduced to this idea, I was working as a nurse’s aide in a hospital. I could smell terminal cancer. At first I thought it was just a natural smell that came with the cancer, but when I asked, I found out that others couldn’t smell it. That’s one way to test the spirit (see my last article on hearing from the Lord). I asked people if they smelled it and since they didn’t, I knew it was my spiritual “nose” that was working. Jesus the Messiah was teaching me different ways He would communicate to me.

What about our sense of taste? There are times when I’ve taken a taste of something and though it didn’t annoy my taste buds, I just knew I wasn’t supposed to eat it. One time I got the message, but I took a couple extra bites anyway and my stomach was upset all afternoon.

As for the spiritual sense of touch, there have been times when I’ve nearly jumped away from someone who wanted to touch me and pass on something bad. On the other hand, the spiritual sense of touch comes into play in a really great and good way often when I minister healing to someone or even if I just am led to touch them when I pray for them.

The Lord can and does work through any of the five senses, or even a combination of them.

He finds the perfect ways to communicate with us, depending on what He knows we will be able to believe and receive. We can ask the Lord in prayer to teach us more about this and of course He will.

If you haven’t read my last article, HOW DO WE KNOW IF IT’S REALLY THE LORD, go ahead and read it. I think you’ll like it and I’d love to hear back from you.
