MY MOM

My mom passed away on Feb. 12th. She was 90 and fell asleep peacefully at home. My niece, Sarah, and her husband Ben were at mom's bedside when she closed her eyes for the last time. Sarah told me she was humming and singing for a day or so before she went off to heaven. My mom was a faithful believer and loved reading the Bible. She read it from cover to cover many times throughout her life and lived by its principles. Mom prayed about everything and she trusted that the Lord would always take care of things, no matter what they looked like. She had a rock solid faith that things would always work out, and she looked forward to heaven.

My mom was a great example of faithfulness in so many categories and she taught me so much over the years. I'll really miss her, but will try to always honor her for the rest of my life.

Thanks everyone for having patience with me through this next month. My computer went on the fritz so I haven't been able to get out the preach letters like I wanted, and have also gotten behind in getting my second WINGS book out. But I am getting a new computer on Friday and will be back up and running soon.

JESUS MADE CHOICES JUST LIKE WE DO

JESUS MADE CHOICES JUST LIKE WE DO
Jesus wasn’t a God-robot. He had total freedom of will to choose just like we do. And He’s not the exact same as God either. James 1:13 says, “God cannot be tempted.” But Jesus “was in all points tempted like as we are” (Heb 4:15). He could have chosen to be disobedient, just like Lucifer chose in the beginning. But rather. . .

Jesus chose to be obedient to God because of us. He believed in what obedience would bring. He believed in his Father’s good will for mankind. The first chapter of John tells us Jesus was there when God created everything: elephants, rabbits, tiny neutrons, huge galaxies, mountains, flowers and everything else—all things for mankind to explore, utilize and enjoy.

Jesus knew God’s intention from the beginning and after Adam sinned and the devil began to have so much influence on earth, Jesus was willing to come to earth and go up against the devil to rescue men and women from his clutches.

To do this Jesus would have to beat Satan at every turn. He would have to live as a man and face all the temptations any man or woman would face. And He had to handle them by choosing God’s way every time.
He didn’t give in to even one temptation to make a bad choice.

As we accept Jesus Christ into our hearts, He gives us the ability to turn to Him for better choices in every situation. He’s been there.

God was sure Jesus would do the right thing but because He loves us so much, He was willing to let Jesus come to earth and live as a man and have freedom of will. Jesus could have chosen differently if He’d wanted to. But because He loved us too, He chose to go through with God’s plan at every turn. He took the horrible results of every bad decision we make and He paid the ultimate price of death and hell.

Then God raised Jesus pure and free forever.

Romans 8:34 says Jesus is at the right hand of God, now living to make intercession for us. He is also right here with us to help us with our choices and Colossians 1:27 says we have Christ in us. How can He be in so many places at once? He’s Spirit and even the scientists now are proving that things can be in two places at once. It’s awesome.

Just like Jesus had decisions to make, let’s make an effort to give God honor by making good decisions ourselves and when we honestly don’t know what choice to make, take it to Jesus, because He always knows the best choice at that time. He’s been through it. He took our place on the cross so that He could always be there to help us.

CAN DEMONS OCCUPY PHYSICAL ITEMS?

CAN DEMONS OCCUPY PHYSICAL ITEMS?
In the Bible, God shows us that spiritual powers can occupy physical things. I’ve experienced that on the evil side, but not so much on the good side yet.  When I was a visiting nurse many years ago, I saw how a demon could live in a painting. I was a visiting nurse helping a man who was in a wheelchair. Over his bed hung a small painting of someone’s face. It was dark blood red, purple, black and blue, muddy brown and gray. It was ugly and evil but it beckoned me to look and when I did, I was jolted. The face moved!

And not just once, but every time I snuck a peek, it moved again and changed in form and tried to come out of the frame. I know this sounds like a movie, right? But it was real. The image in the painting cavorted every time I went to this guy’s house. I was just beginning my journey as a committed Christian, so I had no idea what to do, so I just told my boss I wouldn’t go back there, and she gave me new clients.

That experience made me aware of the possibility of objects having a devil spirit occupation. I don’t go looking for demons on every doorknob, but if the Lord leads me to see things like this, I know it’s for real!

A friend once asked me to do a house blessing and spiritually check out the house she was moving into. I could sense that a devil spirit lived in a small closed sink area. I told the friend she needed to have the landlord get rid of that sink. It didn’t happen, and in a year or so, she had a very large fire start in that area. It consumed the kitchen, and consequently, she decided to move.

On the other hand, I have also been in a house filled with masks and other objects used in idol worship. I expected an evil presence to be in at least a few of those objects, but I asked the Lord, and he told me the items were spiritually clean—just wood and paint.

Many people have mentioned that they could see evil in the depths of a tattoo that seemed to have a life of its own, literally moving on the part of a person’s body.

God sees all, so He can make us aware of the spiritual atmosphere around us. When He shows us evil items that are dwellings for demons, He will also show us what to do about them. God wants us to live in a spiritually clean environment, and He will do everything He can to try to get us to realize it and do what’s necessary to rid ourselves of unhealthy overloads.

DIG AND DUNG

DIG AND DUNG
Yesterday I sat out in my backyard. It was a beautiful sunny day, quiet and no breeze. Several hummingbirds zipped in and out, including a Costas (the kind my mom loves). My resident mocking bird sat on the wire, going through his repertoire of melodies. He even mimics my window alarms! Bright yellow daffodils and delicious-smelling stock are the first flowers to bloom this Spring. I love my small garden menagerie.

My garden is mostly low maintenance, but there are still a few things I need to do to make sure it’s a delight and not a burden. As I was thinking about what to write today, I thought of an old preach letter about gardening and thought I’d look it up. It’s got a great message, and I think you’ll like it.

DIG AND DUNG
God often compares people to trees. And sometimes, we need to do some spiritual digging and dunging to those trees. What does that mean? Jesus tells us about this in Luke 13: 6-9:

“He spake also this parable; ‘A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

“Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?’

“And he answering said unto him, ‘Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.’”

If our lives are spiritually dull and not producing the kind of fruit we desire, then it’s probably a good time for us to do some digging and some dunging.

I have a fig tree in my yard that I’ve had for 24 years. I started off fertilizing it every year, but for the past three years, when I thought about doing it, I remembered how hard it was to dig up the ground around the tree to even be able to put some fertilizer in there. After a while, the ground gets so compacted that it’s a difficult job to put anything new into it.

That’s how our spiritual lives get sometimes—compacted and hard. We need to stir things up, breaking up some of our old ways of thinking and old ways of spending our time. Do we need to ask some questions as to why we think the way we do? When a person digs around a tree, he or she aerates the ground and gets things moving. That’s what we need to do spiritually. Paul tells Timothy:

“Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Tim 1:6-7).

We can never be afraid of digging, stirring things up a bit. It may be exactly what’s required to get rid of old thinking and boring, routine patterns.

Then there’s the matter of dunging. I thought about what it means to dung a tree. Dung is manure, a type of fertilizer. It’s organic, alive, not watered down, not genetically engineered, but good, rich, hot manure. The dictionary defines “fertilize” as “to make fertile; make fruitful or productive; enrich.” Fertilizer is “any material put on or in the soil to improve the quality or quantity of plant growth.” Fertilizing gives plants an extra boost.

Often the process of digging and dunging requires one to get down on their knees. This week I sat down on the ground by one of my small garden plots and dug out some old dead roots. In their place, I could see the tips of hyacinths pushing through to the surface. Maybe it’s a good time to get down on our knees like when we were children and first learned to pray.

It’s also a good time to give our lives that extra spiritual boost of the Word of God. The burdens of the world will always be there. If they are bringing us down, we need some super fuel of what the Lord is trying to tell us; we need His extra energy to make a positive difference in our world.

The Lord gives us hope, and He is the deliverer physically, emotionally and mentally on an individual basis, as well as the deliverer of nations from an international perspective. Anything on the international level still begins with the spiritual health of the individual.

Let’s be open to the Lord’s leading, as far as prayer goes and the sections of scripture He’s guiding us to; maybe a word study on some issue He wants to help us with? Just think about it and see what the Lord brings to mind.

How about testing out a new principle like the laying on of hands for healing, or confronting a devil spirit with the name of Jesus Christ? Jesus told His disciples to search the scriptures. When was the last time we dug into the Bible for 20 minutes or so? Whatever we see Jesus do or any other believer in the Bible do, we can ask the Lord to teach us and help us to do the same and He will be perfectly willing to help and guide us into it.

There are choices we make every day on how to spend our time. A good gardener digs and dungs at least once a year. The man in Jesus’ parable hadn’t done either in three years, so his tree quit producing fruit. Let’s not be like that. Let’s be diligent in taking great care of our spiritual gardens, digging out the weeds and fertilizing the blessings God’s given us.

VICTORIOUS HANDS LIFTED TO THE GOD OF MERCY

VICTORIOUS HANDS LIFTED TO THE GOD OF MERCY
A few years ago, when I was working on a special finish for a hotel in California, I had to match an existing piece. I worked at it but it was difficult. I started to feel the pressure and I was getting more and more fearful as the day went on. The deadline was growing bigger than the possibility of a solution.

Finally, I had to get both of my bosses outside to take a look at the pieces I’d done and get some suggestions. All the suggestions included mixing more paint, starting from scratch and going through all the steps again. Yikes!

But at least I was going to have help. We all went our separate ways for lunch, and I took the opportunity to pray. I prayed for Jesus to help me. I really needed Him and I told Him so. I got the article out that I was currently editing. It’s on being comforted under the wings of God. I needed that myself! I read it and made a few corrections and then opened my Bible to the book of Ruth. As I was soaking in her story, the scripture came into my head: “Lift up the hands that hang down,” from Hebrews 12:12.

That scripture coming to my mind was evidence to me of the love of Jesus and the mercy of God to answer my cry for help.

I remembered a TED talk I saw on the internet. It was about nonverbal communication, and they did a test to show how nonverbal communication could affect a good outcome. The challenge was to lift your hands in a show of victory. You had to keep your hands up for two minutes. As it turned out when the people did it, their blood levels of testosterone went up and they felt more confident.

I decided now was the time to try it.

I went into the restroom. I laid down my cell phone on the sink and looked at the time. I lifted my arms above my head as if I’d just won a race and I said out loud: “I have the victory through Jesus Christ, I have the victory through Jesus.” I snuck a look at my phone and I’d only done it for one minute, so I stretched out my arms a little more and said it a few more times till 2 minutes were up. I left the restroom and doggone it if I didn’t feel more confident. I really did! I felt invigorated and even a little carefree.

It worked! I lifted my hands like it says in the Bible. And the experiment shown on the TED talk showed me how to do it for two minutes straight.

When my one boss came back from lunch, he started working on the pieces with me and we had some good laughs as we both came up with almost the same exact colors. We took them outside to see how they looked against the sample; they were way off! We both looked at each other with wrinkled brows. We shrugged our shoulders and off we went to try again.

The goofy thing is that the piece we were looking at, appeared to have mustard color in it when we saw it outside, and the same color appeared reddish when we had it inside! We got out a fan deck of colors and took the piece outside to match it up. We were sure we’d do better the next day. At least, I knew I’d have a better attitude, and I’d start with my hands lifted in victory.

As well as lifting my hands, I prayed for God’s mercy and kindness to me. I knew He would help me come up with a solution to our problem. “With everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer” (Is. 54:8).
Sometimes it’s difficult to keep working on something that seems so hard. God knows this, and speaks plainly to us. He says in Hebrews 12:11-12: “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands” (Heb. 12:11-12). We can do it, and we are victorious!

If you didn’t get to watch the TED talk before, here’s the link. I think it’s less than 10 minutes long. Enjoy.

By the way, I finished the sample and now it decorates the outer walls of a major hotel in Southern California.

WHAT WE HEAR AND WHAT WE SAY CAN EVEN CHANGE OUR DNA

WHAT WE HEAR, AND WHAT WE SAY CAN EVEN CHANGE OUR DNA!
Radical changes in things with our family, friends, job, and body can make us react like we did before we knew the Lord. That happened to me recently, but this morning I got my mind clear once again. Romans 12:2 tells us: “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” We always need to bring our thinking back to what God says, and not anything else.

I was reading an article the other day about these Russian scientists who are studying DNA. They found that in the 90% of DNA that is not producing proteins, there is a set-up that responds to vibrations and language. The scientists proved that our very DNA responds to words and frequencies and that those same elements can alter our DNA. I believe that when a person gets born again of God’s spirit, the spiritual gift we receive gives us the ability to change our DNA to accept and believe what God says and do things His way. But as the Bible says, we have to continue feeding our DNA the right frequencies and the true words of God, so that we don’t go back into the childish responses we might have had in our past.

I’ve been waking up depressed, and alternately, angry. I didn’t know which of many incidents was causing these reactions, but I did know that something was not right. The incidents didn’t warrant the reactions. I realized this morning that I was starting to think and confess way more negative things than positive ones. Jane and I talked and prayed, and now I’m on the up road once again.

Thank God for His mercy and that He never leaves us but is always willing to help us when we need Him so desperately. Even though I falter at times, I know for sure that in the depths of my heart, I will always be clinging tightly to this great truth from Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Years ago, a funny incident happened to me, that illustrates this principle: God has given us the ability to be the person He called us to be. We have an old self, and we have a new self, and the new self in Christ is much better for everyone!

Here’s what happened: I got in the car and started backing out. The passenger-side mirror got caught on the side of the garage door, so I moved up a little and tried again. And it got caught again. Then I pulled up a little and into the left as far as I could go without hitting a stack of boxes. I tried backing out again, to no avail. Then I got angry, cranked the steering wheel to the left with a jerk, and hit the stack of boxes.

Eventually, I did manage to get the car backed out, but I was mad: “Who moved the boxes so close and who the heck parked this car anyway?!”

I got about two blocks away, and I was still all fired up, angry as heck. Then I caught myself: “Wait a minute; that’s not me!” I listened to a preacher talk about those times when he did or said something that was totally of the flesh and not the Spirit. He called these outbursts “fits of carnality.”

Those thoughts weren’t from the Christ in me. Luke 17:6 came to mind: “Say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” I said out loud, “Anger, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ. Get out. I’m not having you.”

The record of Jesus talking to the unfruitful fig tree also came quickly to mind:  “And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he [Jesus] came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, ‘No man eat fruit of thee hereafter forever.’ And his disciples heard it. In the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots” (Mark 11:13,14 and 21).

So I spoke to my anger in the same way: “I call you plucked up by the roots. And anger, you don’t have any good fruit, so I call you dried up from the roots.”

The insane anger I had over the silly garage incident immediately left, and I had a great day.

What we hear and what we say can even change our DNA! God’s given us the ability to better ourselves. And to those of you younger people who will be having children, you will be passing on your DNA. Give them your best!

Love, Carolyn

QUESTIONS AND EASY CHALLENGES
1. Have you ever caught yourself being mean or angry and wondered, “Where did that come from? That’s not me!” Describe the incident.
2. In a situation where you’ve had a “fit of carnality,” were you able to arrest it? How?
3. What verses or self-talk did, or could you use to back off a “fit of carnality” incident?
4. Recently, what kinds of things have you done or said that are like the fig tree that had no good fruit? What are some things you are considering to do confront and change those futile/fruitless actions or words?
