UNDER HIS WINGS

Sometimes I just want to breathe a sigh of relief and be comforted. And that’s when I like to picture myself snuggled under God’s wing.

Psalm 91:4 says: “He shall cover thee with His feathers and under His wings shalt thou trust.” I love to revel in that image. It brings peace to my mind and heart.

David said: “How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wing” (Ps. 36:7). Almighty God is willing to put His powerful and protective wings over us because He loves us so much.

In another Psalm, David prayed: “Hide me under the shadow of thy wings” (Ps. 17:8). Under God’s wing, nothing can hurt or harm us.

Ruth was a Moabite. When she lost her husband, her mother-in-law told her she should go back to her people. But Ruth wanted to stay and take care of her widowed mother-in-law. She decided, “Thy people shall be my people and thy God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Boaz saw Ruth’s meekness and said, “The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust” (Ruth 2:12).

I imagine Ruth was in some ways very alone in this new place and with new people, so it must have been a wonderful feeling that she could rely on and feel comfort from God.

So, if you’re like Ruth or me and sometimes feel like you need a break or some extra comfort, or you feel like David and need to hide, you can picture yourself cozy under the wing of God.

UNDER HIS WINGS

Yesterday I took Peanut through the car wash. It was a little scary for him but I told him he could snuggle under my arm. He did great and when we came out, he went back over to the passenger side of the car, indicating that I should roll down the window so he could stick his face out and get on with his ride. Psalm 91:4 tells us: “He [God] shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.”

In our busy lives we act a little like Peanut, wanting to always stick our noses out the window, see everything, and experience all the excitement. But we also need to remember that we are not on the treadmill of life on our own. God will always be there for us. We need to find comfort, stability, rest and trust, under His wings.

Jesus rebuked the Jews because they kept making up their own rules. They wanted to stone anyone they felt wasn’t following their agenda. They thought they were doing it all very righteously and boldly for God, but they weren’t. They let the Leviathan spirit of pride take over their thinking and actions. They didn’t take the time to humbly come back to snuggle up to the true God. Instead, they wanted God to corroborate what they decided was His will—not wanting to humbly find out what His will really was. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!” (Luke 13:34).

They wouldn’t listen and their lives were not blessed.

On the other hand, there was Ruth of the Old Testament. Instead of going back to her Moabite gods when her husband died, she made a decision to draw closer to the God of the Israelites and her life was blessed in many ways. This is the prophesy given over her: “The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust” (Ruth 2:12).

Peanut trusted I would take care of Him in the uproar of the car wash. He was smart enough to snuggle up to me. Let’s be smart like Peanut and snuggle up the God, under whose wings we can trust.

Sometimes I just want to breathe a sigh of relief and be comforted. And that’s when I like to picture myself safely tucked under the Lord’s wings.

I painted a reproduction of a famous painting for a local Catholic school. It is Jesus with outstretched arms over several children that have come to Him. I have a copy of it up in my living room to remind me of where I should always be, letting Him take care of me, and not dashing out on my own without Him, but continually under His wings.

Even in the troubles and stresses of life, if we remember to be like those children who pressed in to Jesus, we will receive the assurance, strength and help to get through the difficult times victoriously.
